The ePhoto 780c from Agfa is a prime example of the adage 'you get what you pay for'. It may not have the bells and whistles of a higher-end digital camera, but it is a solidly built, extraordinarily easy-to-use unit that offers good value for money.
This camera stands out from the rest by nature of its colour more than anything else; a metallic blue that manages to look interesting without looking garish. In addition, like some of its more expensive rivals, the 780c boasts a decent-size LCD screen (which can be turned off in order to save battery power - a brilliant idea) and a clever electronic lens cover that opens and closes at the touch of a button.
In essence, the 780c is a point-and-shoot digital camera that shares a lot of the same features and functions of its non-digital ancestors. The documentation enclosed (provided on a 'quick start' fold-out poster and in Adobe Acrobat format) is comprehensive and easy to follow, but a little common sense tinkering will have even the biggest technophobes snapping away in seconds in any case.
Changing the settings for flash mode, resolution, and focus is all done via a set of rather familiar-looking buttons on top of the camera, where a small LCD panel also displays the remaining image capacity of the SmartMedia memory card. An unusually small 2MB card, which can store between 12 - 96 pictures depending on the resolution chosen for each image, is included and is easy to load.
Once the user has captured images, it's simple to transfer them to a PC. They simply plug in a serial cable to both the camera and PC, and the Agfa PhotoWise software will do the rest, whether it is saving, enhancing, and/or managing image files. In addition, a video out capability allows images to be displayed on television, if desired.
Verdict This is the perfect camera for home use. Its easy to use and is excellent for capturing images for presentations, the Internet and email.
Advantages: Easy for beginners, Fairly affordable. Disadvantages: Heavy, Ugly, Glare from flash indicator, Eats batterys!
...have to pay for a agfa power supply, I
rang agfa and they advised me that a non agfa power supply would
invalidate my warranty, when i told them that i was willing to take a
chance they wouldnt give me the required information needed to purchase
a power adapter such as voltage etc. The final complaint is that the flash ready light is located inside the viewfinder,
this is designed to make it easy for you to see when the flash is ready
to use ... ...lit
you cannot see anything through the viewfinder because of the glare
from the light reflecting within the camera... arghhhhh The camera is also quite heavy and fairly ugly as well.
The one redeeming feature is that the LCD screen is very clear and
sharp. ...

This was my first introduction to digital cameras and I approached it with some trepidation...especially as my Mother had also purchased one and is a real Technophobe! The instructions are clear and easy to follow and using the camera is equally easy. You can either use the normal viewfinder, or the small LCD. This LCD feature is invaluable when you want to take a photo, say in a crowded area, or if you have trouble focusing through the normal viewfinder. ... ...pictures on the supplied memory card. The LCd allows to to view and / or delete pictures immediatly. A very handy feature meaning you can retake the picture if necessary! It should eliminate all those pictures with peoples heads cut off! The software for handling the pictures on your PC is equally easy to use, allowing you to sort and file pictures, and also if necessary to adjust the colour / brightness etc. If my Mother can master it anyone can! ...

...out I upgraded to the Agfa ePhoto 780 with some trepidation.
However, the first time out of the box it, not me, performed very well. The images are clear and bright, the automatic flash comes on at the right time and everything is rosy.
NOT SO.
Although much can be made of the camera and the different focal lengths built in, the most important part of any DIGITAL camera is the ability to download to a PC. Here I found that the kit sent was not ... ...and actually download pictures made the whole thing a bore.
Solution.
This is not an edvert for Camera Shops BUT I bought a parallel port Smart Card reader from DataWise and together they make a perfect package. The camera is great but look at your PC and the connections and then buy a Smart Card reader. It saves time, heart-ache and gives great family pleasure. ...

I bought my camera after borrowing the same model from a friend. The digital camera is the way to go, how many times to you get you photos back to find half (at least) of them dissapointing? With this camera you can review your pictures straight away using the LCD display and delete the one you don't want. The 2Mb smart card supplied hold upto 96 pictures at low resolution, for holidays etc. I would recommend buying an additional large capacity card.
