Advantages: excellent torque and performance and excellent chassis Disadvantages: riding position can be a strain after a fir bit of miles on a trip
...I have owned my 636 since it first came out.
I have found the sharp response of the chassis when cornering to be close to perfect. I have ridden an R6 and also ridden with R6's on rideouts and I would say the 636 (2003 model to present) has the edge on corners. I would say the R6 wins on comfort (easier forgiving seat) and also riding position. I did feel the strain after around 70 - 100 miles on the bike on some trips. That however is due to the race nature of the bike. The riding position is one of which was designed more for a racetrack.
I have many good rideouts on my 6r and find that when I let a rideout 'friend' take the bike for a spin; they always come back with a smiling face and praise the bike then-on.
I have attached a 'slip-on' Akrapovic aftermarket exhaust on it now and the sound is one which will make you speechless...

Advantages: Bullet proof 2-stroke engine stands the test of time Disadvantages: Very minor problems, such as plastics scratch a little too easy
...and screaming sound, even at factory condition they can rev up to about nine and a half thousand rpm so i am told! If you were deciding to upgrade your banshee then a good step would be to consider some aftermarket exhaust pipes and a fuel mixture change to suit. My personal favourite set up is a set of Toomey T5 exhausts with 34mm Mikuni carbs and a 310 main jet to be on the safe side with engine temperatures.
The frame is of mild steel contrustion and of a good solid design, my banshee is 13 years old, having many of those years out on the race track and the frame is still in reasonable condition. This is a credit to Yamaha's original design and as long as the machine has been looked after reasonable, this should not cause too much concern for a potential buyer of a second hand Banshee.
The suspension set up it reasonable as standard and after...

Advantages: Nice styling. Best 'Harley' lookalike for the money. Disadvantages: Poor build quality and spec.
...Bought mine new in 1997. Loved it from the word go apart from its tendency to stall as you pull away on a part warm engine. Very reliable but for battery.
As I used it more I felt the brakes were inadequate (only 1 disc on front and drum rear - and it is a heavy bike) so upgraded to harder pads (HH) and a braided S/S brake line. Better but no cigar.
The headlight is too small and feeble for anything other than casual night time use. Uprated bulb made a bit of difference but really not a lot.
Battery life is poor am now on 3rd battery. This may be due to little usage and my alarm system dragging the charge down. Standard fit Yamaha batteries are way too expensive at over £80!
Paint is thin. Chrome is poor. Corrosion is too easy. Front mudgurad needs to be longer to keep water off electrics (bought FenderExtender from M&P). Yamaha...

What HiFi gave this a 5 star rating with good reason. Its an impressive piece of kit and now that it has come down in price, offers a real alternative to load of speakers around the room.
This is why I bought one. The thought of 5 speakers plus cables... more
