BMW R1150GS

Advantages: Reliable, Good Fuel Consumption, Work Horse.
Disadvantages: Heavy, Slightly High on the Suspension, Price of Spares.

Since I have been riding motorbikes since the early 70s. Only fair I put my review in. Now on my second Adventurer. Due to the first one being Stolen. The BMW R1150GS in line with it's predecessors has longer travel suspension, a 30-litre tank combination tyres and other modifications which sharpen its off-road focus although it being on the heavy side. It includes lower first and sixth gear ratios, and luggage options which allow clip on / off panniers. The spring pre-load adjustment for the front suspension is easy to reach but requires a c-spanner. There's an external adjuster for loading the rear spring which can be operated by hand. A long-handled screwdriver is required to adjust rear suspension damping but the adjuster is easy to reach. But the disadvantage point of that it sits slightly high on the road. Which makes climbing ...

Modern Classic Motorcycle

Advantages: Nimble, quick and forgiving handling
Disadvantages: Heavy, expensive and less than adequate toolkit

The term 'modern classic' may be an overused term, perhaps not quite on the scale of 'genius' however, by any standards BMW's R1200GS surely falls within this category. BMW have been building bikes for over 70 years - you'd think they just about got it right but every now and again they pull something out of the hat where the sum of the parts are very much greater than the whole. Until Messrs Boorman and McGregor did their 'Long Way Round' trip, BMW were probably best known (in the non-motorcycling world) for making big expensive touring bikes - either owned by middle aged blokes, or painted white and used by the police. In fact the original GS concept was developed in the late 1970s, and defined the 'Big Trailie' . GS stands for Gelände/Straße - which is German for offroad/ street. The earliest model made came out in 1980 ...

Review of BMW R1200 GS

An incredibly capable bike

Advantages: Handles, goes and stops superbly, good quality, and BMW aftersales is great
Disadvantages: Gearbox is unrefined, though not a major issue. Too many gadgets to go wrong

The R1200GS is one of those love/hate bikes, a giant trailie with an odd engine and whacky suspension, to match it's strange appearance. Not to mention the odd but useful indicator switches (one on each hand, and a cancel switch on the right) and the maintainence free shaft drive. Thing is, love it or hate it, you can't ignore it's presence in the motorcycling world. The R1200GS came out in 2004, replacing the old workhorse R1150GS. Since then BMW have improved it marginally each year, and now the latest 2008 models offer in incredible array of accessories, from heated grips, electronic suspension adjustment from the flick of a switch, all sorts of luggage options, and satelite navigation and ABS, to name a few! I own a 2005 model, and absolutely adore it. The front telelever suspension takes some getting used to as there's not as ...
