Al Gore

Advantages: Very clear message, great photography
Disadvantages: Not long enough!

...If one book could sum up everything about what humanity has done, what humanity faces and what can be done about it - this is it. I was bought this for Christmas - my parents know I'm a bit of an ecologist and thought I'd appreciate this book. Although it told me many things I'm aware of I think more people should read this or see the film because I don't think enough people in the world are aware of just how much impact constant consumption and growth has on others and our planet. Its our only home in the whole universe and we are very selfish in our treatment of it. I can't really build of anything that Al Gore says in the book, its so very well put. Advantages: brevity, character development
Disadvantages: unusual format

...I've long been a Stephen King fan and have read many of his books, yet I have only just read his seminal 'masterpiece' and debut, Carrie. This book was a refreshing break from many of his later works, that all seem to focus on a titanic struggle between good and evil (see The Stand, Desperation et al). This book is nicely free of all sense of good and evil, there are no ethics or political messages here, just a mentally scarred little girl. For those of you who don't know, Carrie is a story about a girl who is bullied into religious fanaticism by her over-zealous she-bull of a mother, which obviously makes her an awkward social outcast at school. This leads to years of bullying that leave her numb to most things, untrusting, and bitter. After she discovers that she can control her telekinesis, or TK, ability, she finds new strength... Advantages: A riveting read with the truth about America's corrupt and incompetent government
Disadvantages: It will make you angry

...voters for no better reason than they wouldn't vote Republican, creating fake ballots, and when all else [almost] failed, stopping the Florida recount just before Al Gore had enough votes to win. Moore makes it clear that Bush has no right to be in power [OK, so he now has a mandate, but he should never have been there in the first place]. Moore then lists the members of Bush's cabinet and describes how each of them has prostituted themselves to big corporations in exchange for their votes, for example voting against emissions regulations because GM paid them to, and how most of them are lying, sleazy incompetents. Of course, none more so than George himself, portrayed here as an illiterate alcoholic criminal. Pretty near the mark, then. The best thing about this book, however, is the way it suggests what the reader can do to change... Read review
