Review of "Al Sol de San Telmo, Buenos Aires"
Just finished up a looong and torturous stay at this SLUM disguised as a guest house/bed and breakfast. The place is SUPER DIRTY, DANGEROUS, and the landlord could care less about you or your comfort- he just wants your money and he will rip you off. Several things that are advertised about this place are outright LIES: There is NO A/C and NO HEAT. If you ask, maybe Fabrizio, the landlord, will give you a fan, an extra blanket, or a small, sad electric heating unit.
There is NO 24-HOUR SECURITY. That is a joke. While staying there, I was ROBBED at GUN-POINT INSIDE the house. The doors are so insecure that anyone can come right in with a similar key or jimmy the door with a credit card. The gun-wielding thieves forced myself and two other guests to get on the floor and give them all our cash before they took off and ran out the door with our money. The compensation that Fabrizio offered? Free delivery dinner that night. That’s all. No break on the rent, and the security situation did not change. Furthermore, he procededed to BLAME US, his GUESTS for the breach in security. Several times I returned to the house to find that the front door was wide open for anyone to come in. VERY UNSAFE.
CONCIERGE? If you are lucky, you can get the owner to answer a few questions for you if he’s not too busy running off to do this or that, meet this or that random girl.
NO ROOM SERVICE. I had to ask repeatedly just to get new towels and sheets for my bed. My floor was never swept, room never cleaned, dust and dirt just accumulated in all parts of the house. I saw the maid only a handful of times in the time I stayed. The entire house is unkept and FILTHY. The bathroom is crawling with ANTS and FLIES and the bathtub is very grimy. Walls are crumbling, lots of stuff is broken, water damage, mold, ect. We had a lot of problems with NO HOT WATER in the winter time.
The kitchens are pathetic and dirty with limited cooking supplies and a stove that sometimes works and a broken oven. No hot water to wash dishes and often no soap available. Kitchen towels are filthy and stained. Moths and flies everywhere. Most people don’t even bother to try to cook here.
Valet, laundry, wake-up service, breakfast: all LIES.. you won’t get these things here. No fitness center, whirpool, hot tub, bike rental, massage, safe, games room, bar, parking. More lies. Not that a person necesarily needs these things, but these things are falsely advertised on a number of websites. There is a dirty rooftop patio with ancient broken plastic furniture and an old, broken parrilla that no one ever uses. No Sunday Asados.
The internet is incredibly UNRELIABLE and the landlord could care less. The house is not charming or comfortable and the landlord is abrasive, selfish, and completely unprofessoinal. The landlord has no permit to rent the rooms, the operation is ILLEGAL. At one point he locked up the lower half of the house, afraid that city inspectors would come in and see the illegal operation he’s running. That meant that all of us in the upper half of the house were prevented from using the kitchen, TV, phone, and about 5 of us were left to share one small, dirty, bathroom.
The only good thing about staying here is that you get to meet lots of interesting people from all over the world (which you can do in a lot of places in Buenos Aires), and that the location is more or less good (although very noisy with bus traffic right on Chacabuco, constant construction in the neighborhood and being very close to San Juan, a large avenue). That’s it. These things are not worth risking your health and safety. In this house, you are not treated as a guest, you’re treated as a bother. Complaints are met with aggression. It is easy to find something at the same price or cheaper that is cleaner and more secure in the same area, especially if you’re only staying for a short visit. Don’t waste your time here. The place is a SLUM and the landlord is a HUSTLER.
