His writing career began when August Derleth bought a long Lovecraftian letter of Alans in 1968 and much to Alans surprise, published it as a short story in Derleth's bi-annual magazine "the Arkham Collector". Sales of short fiction to other magazines followed. His first attempt at a novel, the Tar-Aiym Krang, (has spawned a popular series of Pip and Flinx adventure sequels, at the time of writing this, 13 Pip and Flinx novels, of which i have managed to collect 6 1st/1st signed editions) was bought by Betty Ballantine and published by Ballantine books in 1972.
Since then, Alans sometimes humorous and entertaining short fiction has appeared in all the major sci-fi magazines as well as in original anthologies and several "best of the year" compendiums. He is also the author of numerous nonfiction articles on film, science, and scuba diving, as well as novelizations of several films, including Star Wars which he wrote under the name of "George Lucas", the first 3 Alien films, the Thing, the chronicles of Riddick, the Black Hole, Outland, Starman, Alien Nation and the Dig. Other books to becomes movies include Clash of the Titans, Krull, the last Starfighter, Pale Rider (Clint Eastwood), and more recently Transformers. His novel Cyber Way won the southwest book award for fiction in 1990, the first science fiction work ever to do so. Other works include scripts for talking records, radio, computer games, and the story for the first star trek movie. His novel Shadowkeep was the first ever book adapation of an original computer game. In addition to publication in English his work has been translated into more than fifty languages and has won awards in Spain and Russia.

Books I would personally recommend are:- Icerigger, Mission to Moulokin and the Deluge Drivers (a trilogy). The Howling Stones, Drowning World, Founding the commonwealth Trilogy are Phylogenesis, Dirge, Diuritys Dawn.
And my personal favourite book, "Sentenced to Prism"
Hope this sparks your interest to try out one of his books.
Advantages: A BOOK ! Disadvantages: Dont put it down, you won't pick it up again.
Sagramanda is the name of the city, containing a population of 100 million people. The main character is Taneer, a scientist, who goes on the run with his employer's secret project code.
Foster as usual has a cast of characters; Dephali would die for Taneer, whereas his own father would like to kill him. Chalcedony works for the company and would rather not kill Taneer if it could be avoided. There is also Jena, a serial killer, Sanjay a 'fence', and a troubled chief inspector.
This is apparently classed as a 'techno-thriller' but without the 'thriller'.
I have read many, many Alandeanfoster books and to be honest this is not one of his best, it is along the same lines of the 'Mocking program'.
I have read all the pip and flinx novels, the commenwealth trilogy, the ice rigger trilogy, drowning world, mocking program, howling stones ...

creatures, which proves helpful in avoiding the hellish jungles attempts to kill everyone and everything.
Meanwhile the local villain has followed flinx and is now tracking him through the jungle.
Unbeknown to both parties the Ann are also planetside wanting to get there hands on flinxs ship.
The flaura and fauna are very sly, lethal and hungry. And they don't care who they eat.
The book is a real page turner, a stand alone adventure although it is part of the pip and flinx series. (BOOK 7)
The dialogue, plot speed and characters are well thought out, one of Alans better books.
This book reminded me of 'Hothouse' by Brian Aldiss. Not as odd but in a similar vain. ...

further contact. Are we good enough?
This is simply a riveting read and a classic page turner that is difficult to put down.
All of the characters are fully fleshed out and more importantly, believable. The space side of the story is well written and the aliens (Cocytans) are well...No reveals! The puzzles are well done and the ending is just great. A well thought out and written book that is worth a second reading.
Another cracking read from AlanDeanFoster.
Highly recommended.
