Advantages: Dirt cheap, slimline, plays MP3's and CD's. Disadvantages: Not multi-region, remote will not last.
I am no technical wizard; I clung on to my VHS recorder for dear life until videos became virtually non-existent for the most popular films. It was then and only then that I decided to invest in a DVD and even then I looked for the cheapest I could find. Functionality was my only purpose when searching for a player. I cared not whether it could play mp3's, CD's or STD's I just wanted a slimline, unobtrusive player that played a DVD from start to finish. As such finding the AlbaDVD45 for a mere £27.99 in my local Asda was a Godsend.
Measuring 36 cm across and 5 cm high this is a surprisingly slimline DVD player. It is quite stylish for the price with a silver shell and black panel front. Setting it up is refreshingly simple and requires plugging the scart lead (supplied) into the back of the DVD player and then into the scart ...

Advantages: Small, well built, great picture and sound, HDMI, Freeview and loads other connections. Disadvantages: NONE, NONE NONE!!!!
put together. When you turn it onto standby a nice blue light appears on the front just underneath the ALBA logo!! Yes I am a badge snob!
The initial setup is a doddle. WHen you turn it on for the first time it asks you your country and language and then if you want to tune. Tuning took a couple of muinutes but it picked up all the freeview channels no problem. Then the surprise came. The picture and sound were fantastic for such a reasonably priced budget make TV. Colour and contrast ratios are really good without any fiddling what so ever and the sound is nice and balanced.
It has a full compliment of connections on the back. HDMI, SCART, COMPONENT, LINE OUT, SPDIF/COAX OUT, so really you could connect this to anything. I haven't coz it is in the kitchen, but I am sure upscaled DVD's, Bluray and games consoles will look fantastic ...

Advantages: Reasonable price, good all rounder Disadvantages: No headphone socket
this model has been reduced in price and I believe you can no longer buy new ones however, to get a compatible model you are looking at around the £60 to £70 mark.
At the time this was a very reasonable price and not including the Internet it was I believe the cheapest 14? TV of this type of specification available.
~~~Dimensions~~~
Just in case you were concerned whether this would fit in a particular gap, especially as this size of TV is aimed at the kitchen/bedroom market it measures 34x38x37.5cm (HxLxD). Therefore it is reasonably compact and is ideally suited for its purpose.
According to the instruction leaflet it weighs 9kg and although I have never measured it myself (even I am not that sad!) it does feel very lightweight and if I had being guessing as to its weight I would have said nearer 5kg.
