I guess I was quite fortunate as a teenager. I never suffered one single solitary spot throughout my latter school years and I never had to put up with “chip pan hair” as some of my poor unfortunate peers did. Oh how those poor things suffered at the hands of merciless bullies.
Mind they are probably having the last laugh now with most likely perfect complexions (what a quaint old fashioned word that is!). Whereas I can’t ... ...having to slap gallons of industrial strength moisturiser on my face!
And I suspect that as the years roll on I will get more than my fair share of “laughter lines”. But I digress, as usual! What, you might be wondering was I doing a few hours ago today with my scatty red locks looking like I had taken a dunk in the local chippies deep fat fryer! Well wonder no longer, all is about to be revealed!

My hair has been looking less than lustrous of late. I blame it on two things. First off I have been scraping it cruelly back into a pony tail while the rest of me has been pounding on the assorted torture machines courtesy of Joseph’s Gym.
Secondly I had run out of my favourite shampoos after the testing onslaught during Ciaos “best shampoo op” competition (congrats to Moose here!). To sum up I have been neglecting my treasured crowning glory, shock horror!! I was starting to resemble one of those tumbleweed things that, errr….tumble about in those old Westerns!
I needed to redress the balance, desperately, and quickly before it was going to become necessary to sign off here as Scattyredhead and join up again as “Tumbleweed”! I needed to pour love, care and massive dollops of moisture back into my arid locks.
My first thought was to use the above product simply because I had done so in the distant past, pre-chemical enhancement days. Those were the days when this product came in three separate little tubes that you had to steep in warm water for a little while and then snip off the top before applying to wet hair.
I found out all that time ago that it was a good idea to use scissors and not try to attempt to tear off the corner with your teeth…...euuw! I also discovered the second time to hold the tube a little way from the top as you snipped. I managed not to imbibe any of it that time but had the devils own job wiping it off the tiles and rubbing the shower curtain over my head to salvage the stuff that shot its way across there!
Imagine then how thrilled I was to find out that the days of the three tubes were a distasteful and distant thing of the past when I saw a large tube of Hot Oil Shower Works in the hair care product shelves at Tescos. I swear my hair began to perk up a bit all of its’ own accord in anticipation of the treat awaiting it that evening!! And at just under £3 it wasn’t breaking the bank.
It’s a 60 ml tube with up to four intensive hair treatments inside, thoughtfully measured out for you by way of little arrows on the tubes’ side! It’s dead easy to use. Wet hair, apply the measured amount, more if your hair is long, massage in and then rinse after one minute. Then shampoo and condition as usual.
It does say in capital letters on the tube not to exceed one minute. I guess this is because it does what it needs to do in exactly that time, any longer and I should imagine the “chip pan “scenario would be coming to haunt you!
Evidently you can use it as often as you like without ‘over-loading the hair’. I have been using mine every other time I wash my hair. But it really needs that deep conditioning treatment at the mo. I also use VO5 conditioner afterwards and then spray in conditioner that I get from my hairdresser.
For those of you who are interested, the laboratory tests show:
One minute intensive repair treatment. (I just told you that!)
Reconstructs damaged hair. (It’s working on mine!)
Reduces breaking by brushing by up to 60%. (I don’t know about this one, I never brush my hair. Fingers when dry and a wide toothed comb when wet for mine)
Doubles the strength of you hair. (Wonder how I am going to put that to the test then!)
Contains UV damage protector. (Can only be a good thing)
Removes 75% more chlorine than shampooing alone. (Great for the swimmers out there then!)
As you might be able to tell by the description of this product it works with the heat of the water you put on your hair, so no more dunking of little tubes before you use it, Hurray!
Surprisingly it doesn’t leave your locks feeling at all oily or greasy as you might expect if you were using this for the first time. Mine has been left feeling a damn sight better than it did a few weeks ago pre VO 5 Hot Oil, quite soft and silky actually. Wonder if they have thought about developing a one minute body reconditioner!!
Amongst other stuff written on the back of the tube it says:
’…developed with quick activating nourishing ingredients that penetrate deep down to build inner strength, plus a time release vitamin complex’.
So as I sit here several hours later waxing lyrical to you about this stuff, whilst tossing my head back and forth I swear I can feel all those little vitamin complexes being set free! “Wheeeee” they all go as they slide wantonly around my follicles!
Advantages: works extremely well, inexpensive, did I say works really well???? Disadvantages: none at all!
...a must! Now thanks to Alberto V05 I've found the answer to get soft, smooth hair again and to wave goodbye to that horrible dullness. And the best thing about it? It only costs a couple of quid!

1) Ease of Use
Compared to other hair repair products this is extremely easy to use. You simply put it in a cup of hot water and I mean hot NOT boiling. If you do add boiling water and put the tube of hot oil in it you will find that the oil is far too hot to touch never mind put on your hair! ...

Advantages: Leaves hair in wonderful condition. Quick and easy. Disadvantages: Fairly expensive
I have very fine hair, which tends to dry out very easily and ends up looking dry and lifeless. While I do use VO5 styling creme after washing it to add extra shine ands sleekness, this is only a temporary cover up, and by the end of the day has usually worn off. That's why I regularly treat my hair to VO5 hot oil.
VO5 Hot Oil is designed to add life to your hair, and repairs any damage, leaving you with silky, glossy locks. And that's what it does ... ...and looks amazing, which is quite a wonder considering my hair type.
The Oil is very easy to apply and the instructions are very clear. - first, you heat the oil for a minute (it comes in pre-measured tubes)
- then, simply massage into wet hair, before washing and leave for a minute. You must not leave in on for longer than a min., no matter how bad you hair condition is. - Then, just go about your usual routine as normal.
It really is as simple ...

Advantages: Really does what it says - feels good, repairs damage and strengthens hair, and all for a very cheap price Disadvantages: None
I recently bought my first pack of VO5 Hot Oil on the suggestion of a friend. My hair breaks very easily, and as it is long (and I'd like to grow it longer) and very fine, this is even more of a curse than it would be otherwise. This oil has been my latest (and probably most serious, recently) attempt to do something about it.
First off, the product makes several claims about what it can do, including, most importantly, doubling the strength of ... ...60%, using various bits and bobs and various psuedo-technical words (yes, including the ubiquitous pro-vitamin B5). It also claims to remove 75% more chlorine than ordinary washing and to protect against UV damage. Although it does not explicitly claim to do anything for the look of your hair, I think the implication is that by reconstructing damaged hair and reducing breakage, it can improve the lustre and fullness of your hair. It claims to protect ...

Advantages: It works well, makes your hair nice again :) Disadvantages: None
I discovered this product here on Ciao! I’d been flicking through peoples opinions and come across this one quite a few times, I read a number of rave reviews before finally deciding to give it a go! The hair that people had once admired about me had turned into a bit of a birds nest thanks to the many times I’d bleached, dyed, curled, straightened and generally neglected it! For this reason, I chose the revitalising one, there are 3, ... ...sure about this product but when I was in Boots today I saw it on buy one get one free on VO5 products, so my friend bought some nourishing creme and I decided to try this. It worked out at only £1.50 for 3 with the offer.
To buy the tubes seperately costs 99p, and £2.99 for 3, so it works out cheaper to buy 3 anyway! I got it home and decided to use it straight away, my hair is drying as I type this! I did as the instructions said, let it warm ...

Advantages: Keeps hair healthy and shiny Disadvantages: gets expensive when use all the time
ALBERTOVO5HOTOIL SHOWER WORKS – Nourishing
Started using this some time ago, after damaging my hair with straightening irons, recommended by a member of staff at Superdrug.
It’s a hotoil treatment to nourish and protect vibrancy and shine of your hair, particularly good if your hair is coloured as it extends the life of your colour to be used whilst having a shower, no hassle, no mess and no need to heat before using.
It also doubles the strength of your hair weakened by colour treatments, reduces breakage from brushing by upto 60% and contains UV damage protector.
It’s a small clear 60ml tube, which I believe comes in two varieties either Moisturising or Nourishing, blue/silver at the top of tube with gold and purple print.
Before entering your shower, make sure it’s warm at least and not cool ...
Advantages: sleek, shiny hair Disadvantages: expensive with frequent use
In the past I had used the Vo5hotoil treatments that came in the little tubes but they were such a farce having to put them in a cup of hot water first that most of the time I would be in the shower before realising I had not even got them out the draw.
Then they introduced - HotOil Shower works - great because you could just keep the tube in the shower along with your shampoo etc and it was there to use whenever you want.
So what does it claim to do .....
It says it is a 1 minute reconstructor to nourish hair. The treatment is a blend of vitamins and nourishing wheat proteins to help build inner strength and leave your hair beautifully shiny. It is an intensive treatment that works with the heat and moisture of your shower to protect vibrancy and shine, extending the life of colour treated hair.
It also states that it will ...
Advantages: easy to use, not messy like the hot oil tubes Disadvantages: none
I tried this because I was spending so much money on the hotoil individual tubes and needed an alternative. I figured that this might be just as good. It turned out to be better though because you can choose exactly how much of the product you use and don't have to use it hot like the tubes. My hair stays feeling really soft for upto a week, and considering my hair is usually very dry as it's coloured, it's a great investment! Use it every week or two and your hair will stay looking really healthy. It also makes it easier to lather up your shampoo, as you use it before you wash your hair. It feels much thicker after this and it will smell great. Definitely buy this, but don't use it too often as your hair just does not need it. ...
