This must be the ultimate prepay WAP phone, usurping the previous title holder the Trium Mars prepay. The Alcatel is even smaller, thinner, shorter, with a stubby aerial, - in the good looks dept it's much more elegant too. Despite being the smaller phone, standby times are better at 165 hours (quoted figures)with talk time around 4.5 hours.
The price on Vodafone Smartstep is a penny under 50 GBP making it good value for a WAP phone. The Smartstep tariff is 25p for the first 3 minutes of the the day and any following call time is charged at only 5p per min. This means it suits daytime users more than off peak users, where you would be better off on BT cellnet prepay tariff, or to buy the phone on Vodafone's other tariff 'Allcalls'.
The phone is absolutely packed with features. Of course it has WAP, browser version 1.1 which is automatically configured to Vivazzi -Vodafone's own portal, I personally find it quite easy to connect - I've heard horrendous connection problems with other people's WAP phones on other networks, but amazingly I don't find a problem with Vodafone. But I must confess I don't WAP much as it seems a severe anti-climax after viewing web pages on a PC. Sort of the same difference as looking at a glossy colourful picture rich Sunday Magazine and then sticking your nose into the column classified ad section of your local newspaper...yukkkk! AND you pay 10p per minute for viewing black and white text on a matchbox sized screen...NO thanks, I'll stick to PC surfing which is 'free' and better enabled. The scrolling on the phone is handled by a ball shaped rocker button, push up to scroll up, down to scroll down, and press to OK, pretty straight forward.
Coming back to the features, it sports vibration alert (but is perhaps a bit weak) 3 games, an alarm and appointment reminder, analogue style clock, built in speaker phone function, (which I use all the time to prevent frying my brains) ascending ringer tone, calculator, predictive SMS, and believe it or not a currency convertor (handy for those USD to GBP conversions, controls for adjusting LCD contrast, and intensity of the backlight, and one programmable melody for the ringer.
As with some motorola phones it unifies 'answer call' and 'hang up' with one button - press for line, press again to finish call.
The front panel can be changed and swoped which tends to be the fashion these days, the phone I acquired came with a high tech silver finish and is satisfactory for me, otherwise it's £9.99 for buying a new panel.
Call clarity is pretty good, and I suspect now all phones are pretty much the same with the improvement in technology.
The phone package comes with £2.50 worth of calls and £7.50 extra when you register the phone with vodafone (pretty standard) and comes with a unique visually and physically integrated belt clip which attaches itself directly to the phone, and a desktop charger stand, which gives the phone a bit more presence when it is charging (about 3 hours - but 12 hours on first charge). As the phone is standing vertically, you can see the caller display if there are any incoming calls, rather like a home cordless DECT phone.
My criticisms of the phone is the LCD is perhaps a shade too dark, making the display slighly more difficult to read in low light situations, (so you have to activate the backlight). The characters on the LCD are also a tad on the small side.
But overall a very small WAP phone with heaps of features at a rock bottom price. I find the built in speaker function extremely useful and have network unlocked the phone, (Vodafone relieve you of an extra £35 for doing so) now I can use my contract Vodafone, Cellnet, and Virgin SIMS in the phone too, and utilise those 500 mins / 200 mins free off peak mins without microwaving my brain. (I've about 900 mins to use per month!...though I haven't as yet ascertained if I can use these for WAP access)
Advantages: Small, sexy and Different Disadvantages: Accessories harder to find than Nokia
I've had my Alcatel 302 for over 5 months now - since the first day it went on sale on the first network to offer it. I have not regretted this once.
It cost me under £70, (The price that Vodafone is raising it to), and as it was on Virgin, they SIM unlocked the phone for free, which everyone else charges £35 pounds for. So I use my Orange Everyday 50 sim in the evenings and weekends, and my Virgin SIM in the daytime (when I have to). It works out ... ...small - I dont think I've seen a smaller wap phone apart from that expensive SONY. It fits well in the hand, and when you are back at your desk, you have a great desktop stand/charger which is neat apart from the fact that you need to take the stand as well as the charger if you need to recharge.
As I have been worried about frying my Brain, I love the handsfree speakerfone - its great.
Technically speaking, it has everything - WAP, good reception, ...

The Alcatel 302 OT is a mobile, which is ideal for young people who like to have a mobile, which isn't to expensive and which has many functions.
It is really small, but not too small. The cover is changeable and in green, blue red, silver and light green available.
To his functions you can count: calculator, WAP, games..........
