Aldi first opened their stores in Ruhr valley (Germany) about 40 years ago. It then moved to the rest of Europe and USA, before finally hitting UK streets only relatively recently.

Aldi claim to offer excellent quality food and drinks at low prices. And they can offer food goods (And others) at low prices. They do not offer famous brands, usually only Aldi make products (with occasional known brands). However, the quality of the goods is not always up to standard!

Recently we did some shopping in our local store, and bought some goods that we simply could not eat. We made a purchase of a meatloaf, which had a very strong salty flavour. Another purchase a loaf of bread, seemed stale, compared to those of other stores.

However they do also do some really nice stuff. We once bought some cheesecakes, which had to be the best we had tasted. Also things like their pitta bread (though not a long shelf life at all) and soft drinks (can’t comment on alcoholic drinks as I don’t drink). Also crisps and fresh foods are quite okay.

An annoying thing about the store is that despite it being quite small, they insist on selling things such as bikes, garden furniture etc. Another problem is they don't stock things regularly, so what you buy one week and really enjoy- may not be there next week!

In addition they have just four tills at the checkout in our store, with more than one rarely open, meaning long queues. Members of staff have to remember the price of EVERY item in store (How do they do that?), which must (and based on personal experience has proved it does) lead to mistakes.

Prices in Aldi’s are reasonable. 4 pints of fresh milk is about 83p, and a bottle of diet coke about 20p. Buying economy ranges from major supermarkets would probably work out as cheap, if not cheaper. If it sold more branded goods at low prices it might be better welcomed.

Aldi’s in my opinion is suitable for ‘bits and pieces’ type shopping, such as milk, sugar, soft drinks etc. And maybe, with trial and error for the rest, you may be able to get a few good bargains. But I certainly wouldn’t recommend it for any big shopping.

This opinion is based on the Haverhill store.

Good op, have you tried the carrot cake that Aldi sell? It is fab, I've not tasted anything like it!

A very helpful opinion. I'm really surprised that the staff are expected to learn the price of everything. Working longish hours, doing the same thing, mistakes are bound to happen. Why!?
