Over the years I've been in six different branches of Aldi . I was in the Middlesbrough branch yesterday which prompted me to write this opinion on Ciao. Let's start with the downside. The company has an aversion to having two or three tills open at one go. Even at busy times on a Saturday in the Keighley branch I well recall grimacing as I saw the length of the queue in front of me. It was the same in Middlesbrough yesterday. Eight people were in front of me before they grudgingly put on an extra till for about five minutes. They don't have an express till or under tens items either . So if like me you have only say half a dozen items in your basket and the pesron in front has enough to feed the five thousand then you can imagine the frustration. Fair enough they run the stores as economically as they can to keep the food prices as low as possible, but do the management know they are losing customers though the horrendous queues.
Another downside to Aldi is you have to pay for your own carrier bags so unless you have re -usable ones at your disposal ,I would suggest you could lose some of what money you have saved on the 5p bags if you have a trolley full. Again I understand it is to keep costs down but i is still annoying just the same. The staff always seem friendly and cheerful enough in all the stores I've been in that is if you can find them.
Also some of the prices are not as cheap as they would have us believe . Tinned mushy peas for instance 15p at Aldi , but only 11p at Tesco and 13p at Kwik Save ( I love mushy peas!) Tesco wins on the flavour too by the way for me! Their own brand of white sliced bread at 21p called Spinaca is easily beaten too by Kwik save at 15p . The taste is about the same in quality . Female sanitary towels 10 for 46p is not that cheap either ( rest assured I don't use these !)I happen to know(don't ask me how ) that Safeway do 10 for 21p
Those are my main gripes about Aldi.
On to the positives...
Although as I said not every item is cheaper in Aldi it would be unrealistic to expect that really. To be fair to them some of the prices are very good . The best bargain in store I spotted in Middlesbrough was a non food item fruit trees for the garden.
Apples and pears priced at an incredible £2.99 each . WOW ! They were on the whole healthy too ,and varieties such as Blenheim Orange, and Bramley were in store to name but two.( I knew I'd find a way of incorporating some gardening into my op !).
These are a third of the price in Woolworths and should not be missed.
Other food bargains include Harvest Spread Peanut Butter 454g for only 69p ( what an healthy diet I have ) Ye Olde Oak Baked bean brunch only 49p around half the price of similar in the co-op. Also own brands of cola pop 2 litre bottles 15p is another good deal that springs to mind.
The store is a mish mash of obscure names you have never heard of and some established companies such as Ye olde Oak.
There is plenty of aisle room in most Aldi's ,great from pushchairs etc and this I like.
In conclusion a store that is definately worth a look . Be careful though don't take everything at face value. In many cases better quality food can be bought elsewhere at comparable prices.

I agree with you about the queues at the tills, although I prefer Aldi to all the other super markets

My family often visit the Wakefield Aldi and I quite agree that there are cheaper goods at Asda . We find that there is only ONE till open on most occasions that we visit and it is so boring waiting for them to condescend to serve you that it is tempting to sneak out and go to Asda next door. But then we would lose our £1 for the trolley.I have found quite a few Gluten free items at Aldi which I have to eat and it is quite good to be able to get soups etc that are cheap and suitable for me. Often the bread is 15p but they soon sell out, but Asda also sell 15p loaves.I think it is child friendly, but let down by the till service.

You've certainly done your research on the sanitary towels!!!
