...If you've seen the fims adaptation of this novel featuring Tom Cruise, don't let that put you off reading the novel. This was one of Grisham's early books, and doesn't seem as formulaic as a lot of the others. The story is simple - an impoverished yet brilliant law student is recruited by a small Memphis law firm. He then discovers the main client is the Mob, and sets out to expose them. The nove is pacy, and even when dealing with complex law issues surrounding off shore accounts does not get too technical to spoil the story. The characterisation is much better than in the movie, and there are more twists and turns in the plot. Definitely a good beach read.... Read review

...This is the first Scarpetta novel.I have vivid memories of reading this when it first came out. It is a real whodunnit and one of the best novels in this series. The killer is only revealed at the very end. I stayed up all night to read it. Much of the content of the novel is used to build the character of Dr Kay Scarpetta a coroner and forensic investigator. It also shows how the world of forensic analysis of crime scenes work. The scens is Richmond Virginia Dr Kay Scarpetta is an Italian lady doctor. Her main interest in life is carrying out autopsy of dead bodies killed by violent crime. In this particular novel someone is going around strangling young ladies with chord in a very slow and nasty way. Dr Kay must find out who the next victim will be, wonder who?
