I recently bought a teak garden table, chairs and parasol made by Alexander Rose. Because of the price - we looked around to try to find an equivalent product which was cheaper. Unfortunately, having seen the Alexander Rose range, nothing else compared in terms of quality or comfort (I didn't realise wooden chairs could be so comfortable!). Everything else seemed rather flimsy or rickety in comparison.
I think that their products are a very good choice ethically as well. Most of the furniture is made in a village in Ghana where they pay their workers a fair wage and give them and their family health care. They're also strict about where their wood is sourced from, to ensure that it's sustainable.
The furniture I bought is beautiful and unlike a lot of other garden furniture on the market, doesn't have to be treated, although I've chosen to treat it to try to keep the original colour for as long as possible. It's beautifully made, all the joints are good quality and the table and parasol and chairs are all very stable. All in all I ended up paying rather a lot more than I budgeted for, but am very happy with my choice and have hopefully got myself some furniture which will last for years, so in the long run I think it's been worth paying more for something of such good quality from a company which I believe has good ethics.
We chose quite a traditional style of furniture, which I don't think will date, but they do also do a wide modern range which would look rather funky on the terrace of a more modern house.
