Alfa's stylish Escort-rival. Early cars were poorly built and dynamically below par, but matters were greatly improved thanks to more stringent production standards, revised chassis and new engines. A hatch, the 145 is the characterful 3- priced to match. The 146 is a more conservative and less popular 5-door.
The cabin has always looked very dated but is very spacious. Equipment includes driver’s airbag, ABS, alarm and impact beams all as standard. However, fit and finish is often sub-standard and the driving position is awkward. Another drawback is high insurance costs.
But on the driving front, handling is precise, steering is sharp and grip is strong.
