Aliens Love Underpants is written in shiny silver letterrs, with a sort of twinkly effect in them, and a small cirle in the top left of the cover tells me that this is a Richard and Judy Childrens Book Winner , and that this is for early readers, age 5 + .
Opening it up, there is a double page covered in various pants - frilly knickers, bloomers, boxers and Y- fronts . This is very bright and colourful, and very visually ... more
I recently started a 'story sacks' creative course through my daughters school . The idea is that you select a book you think your child will enjoy, and then create puppets, games and other things to go along with the book and assist you in telling the story .
I was a little bit stuck for which book to choose - my daughters book collection is, perhaps unusually for a siz year old, mostly non-fiction, or stories shes had since she was two which are absurdly short. So, I went scouting for a book that would be fun for her to read, and for me to work with . The book I chose was Aliens Love Underpants , with words by Claire Freedman and illustrations by Ben Cort .
Now, I know you should never judge a book by it's cover - but the cover did completely charm me - a clear night sky with twinkling stars, and a trio of aliens, all different shapes and sizes, prancing abour wearing assorted undewear - Y-fronts, granny bloomers - and not just on their bums! My daughter is at that age where willies, bums, and pants are funny, so this is definitely a good book for her .
This is very bright and colourful, and very visually appealling- my daughter was pointing at them telling me if the pants were for a man and a woman, and even commented that one paid was like my pants!
Then we get to the inner title page, with the left page having a couple of dedications and all the publisher information, and the right hand page reinforcing the title of the book, and showing a happy, spotty, four-armed green alien with pigtails yanking up a pair of yellow Y-fronts .
Then we get to the story itself . Written in poem form, with four lines to each double page, it's very easy to read, without being dumbed down to overly simple words The poem flows nicely, and has simple rhythm that makes it actually pretty easy to remember verses. I think within a few more reads, my daughter will have it memorised.
An example of a verse :
They like them red, they like them green, Or orange like satsumas. But best of all they like the sight Of grannys spotted bloomers
With each verse being on a seperate double page spread, that leaves lots of room for illustrations - which throughout the book are bright, colourful, and varied. I like the fact that no two aliens look the same, and that they vary greatly in size, shape, colour, and the number of limbs and eyes they have. There's even a baby alien in a pram and an alien pet dog .
There are lots of subtle little touches in each illustration which make for great 'can you find this...' games with my daughter, such as magazines with pictures of pants on them, or collosal monuments to pants featuring washing instructions .
My daughter loves this book now - and I have to admit, I really do too . Its colourful and bright, with amusing illustrations and a simple repetitive rhythm that makes the words easy to memorise . The story itself is delightfully simple and lightly humerous, and I have to give this 5 stars overall .
It is available from Amazon.co.uk for just 2.99, significantly cheaper than the 5.99 cover price .
Advantages: Very fun and beauitifully illustrated Disadvantages: None!
Aliens Love Underpants is a beautifully written and illustrated award winning book by Claire Freedman and Ben Cort. Published in 2007, it was featured on Richard and Judy and was a winner in the childrens book 5+ catagory. You can easily see why this book is a winner. It is a hilarious read and the pictures are perfectly anchored to the story. The entire story rhymes and each page goes along the lines of... They like them red, they like them green, ... ...underpants in space so the aliens must come to earth to indulge in their guilty pleasures. They lie in wait until Mum has put the washing out, then swing and slide from the pants, having a great time until she is ready to come back. They the hurry away before anyone sees, unfortunately this time, the tiniest alien gets trapped in the pants and ends up in the washing basket. The moral of the story is revealed on the last page.... So when you put your ...

...of the story are that Aliens are obsessed with underpants and come down to earth to do strange things with them in secret. The aliens in this book are loveable looking cuddly things with long snouts and reassuringly child-like looking flying saucer shaped spaceships covered in 'I love pants' stickers and the like.
The book is set out as a lovely sing-songy rhyme that when spoken softly can be a really nice bedtime rhyme, or if I'm trying to keep ... ...can put on a silly voice and make him laugh like nothing else ever does. The words are brilliant, and my son remains captured by the whole reading 'ceremony' every time I read this story.
The book is a reasonably standard size for a childrens book, is printed on high quality paper that has so far survived my sons licking, chewing and various other things. It is £5.99 in shops, but Amazon currently have it for about £2.99 and several places have ...

...their own vocabulary. Apparently, Aliens are huge fans of Human undercrackers. They even read underpants devoted magazines and have constructed statues to idolize knickers. Soon they are on their way to earth to seek out some underpants for themselves. Beware, your children might insist on inspecting their pants before putting them on after reading this book! The story is easy to understand and appeals to children of all ages (mine are two and four) ...
