Review of "All Afloat on Noah's Boat - Tony Mitton"
Enjoying the lovely summer holidays with my girls!
I was very lucky recently to attend a talk given by the children's poet and author Tony Mitton and as a consequence I couldn't resist buying a couple of books for my daughters which he very kindly signed. One of these books was 'All Afloat on Noah's Boat' which is a fabulous story poem based on the story of Noah's Ark.The story starts in the traditional way of all the pairs of animals boarding the ark as the rain starts to fall. However, after a few days of being cooped up inside they start to feel a bit fed up and there is the chance that they will all start fighting. Noah needs to come up with a plan which he does when he announces that he is going to hole a Creature Cabaret and that all the different animals can join in! All the animals want to take part and they put on a fantastic show with elephants blowing high fountains, snakes tying themselves in knots and toucans tapping their beaks to name just a few acts. The only ones who don't take part are the caterpillars who are busy wrapping themselves up in a cocoon. Little does everyone realise though is that those quiet caterpillars are actually going to provide the best finale of all when they transform into beautiful butterflies just as the show is ending!
This is a hugely entertaining story that is also very well written as it uses rhyme to tell the tale. Tony Mitton comes up with some very interesting ideas for Noah and all the animals and uses some fantastic words to describe what happens. Here is just one excellent example:The crocodiles balanced on the tips of their tails.
The monkeys screeched out mega-wails.
The talent show was such a ball,
There's not the space to tell it all.
The rhythm throughout is great and it almost wants to make you sing it. In fact it sounds very rap-like in the beat and the rhythm and reading it in that style makes it a lot of fun.The illustrations by Guy Parker-Rees are quite stunning and really help to bring the story alive. The colours are extremely bright and vibrant and all the pictures have a great deal of humour. Images of mall these different creatures singing and dancing really are a big hit with my daughters. They especially love the picture of the dazzling butterflies towards the end of the book. It is definitely worth taking your time looking at all the wonderful illustrations.
The book has a RRP of £5.99 but it is currently available on Amazon for only £3.95 (July 2010). I also notice that you can buy the book with a CD for £5.61. Overall this is a great book for children and both my daughters and I thoroughly recommend it.
