Single mum, Sally Freeman, wants a better life for herself and her son, Charlie. She lives on a run down estate, in a tenement block, in Liverpool and has dreams of living a better life. Her ex-Johnny is like a father to her son (even although he is not Charlie's father), but unfortunately this was not enough to keep Sally and Johnny together. Sally always thought that Johnny had no ambition and his lack of ambition helped to push them apart.
In reality, Johnny had dreams of being a painter, but had not told Sally as he did not think that he was good enough. The only person he told was Charlie, who decided that, unbeknown to Johnny, he would do something about it because he believed in Johnny.
Sally, meanwhile, was doing a computer course to contribute to her better life. She begins to go out with the teacher, Spencer, who is very well off. Unfortunately, he does not bond with Charlie, so the book has a very good message that money is not everything.
Sally decides that she is fed up living in her neighbourhood, where it is so bad that nobody has any respect for it. She decides to do something about it. She applies to the Council and gets a grant, then gets the community together to redo the place up. All her efforts are rewarded - as well as now living in a nice area, the people have bonded over their efforts, and she is in line for a prize for her efforts, as well as thinking of setting up her own business.
The book has a real community feel about it, and makes you want to get up off your bum and do something in your neighbourhood with neighbours and friends, just because of what you feel Sally gets out of what she does.
Whether things work out with Spencer, you just have to read for yourself, but it is a very well written book, with characters that are very life like and a story from an excellent angle. The author is Carole Matthews, who has written other good books - this is probably one of the best ones that I have written.
I got my copy of the book from my local library, which is where you could perhaps get a copy. Failing that, or if you want to get a copy of your own - you could try Amazon or ebay for a cheap copy. It is definately worth a read.

This is a romantic comedy set in Liverpool about Sally Freeman - a twenty-something single ... more
mum and superwoman - and her bid to make her world a better place. Hopelessly in love with her is Johnny - an artist with not a penny to his name - and Spencer ...
