Advantages Changes your life forever

Disadvantages temper tantrums and expensive to run

It was the 26th October 1996 it was cold and wet outside yet i was in a maternity ward in devon the pain was unbearable and i'd been in labour for 31 and a half hours but at exactly 9:05 i gave birth to a beautiful healthy baby girl we named her nikita.

Nikita weighed in at 6lb 13oz a nice healthy weight for a baby that was 2 weeks overdue.
Not long after she was born we noticed something a bit extraordinary about our perfect little girl she was born with an extra thumb, it was not formed properly and it was only attached by a very small piece of skin yet it had it's very own nail so this suggested that it did in fact have a blood supply going to it.

The midwifes reassured us that although it was very rare for this to occur it would not cause her any problems and we should just take it in our stride as there was nothing doctors could do until she was a little older.

Nikita
That night i couldn't sleep as i was so excited to have my very own little girl to love and that would love me just the same to me she was perfect in every way even with her extra digit.

The next morning still brimming with pride i was looking at her every detail when i noticed something a little odd about her toes
on both feet the two middle toes seemed to be joined together i called for the midwifes and they again said that she would be perfectly fine and that having webbed toes was not that uncommon.

Two days later i was able to take my daughter home and show her off to the world i was a very proud mummy, nikita was a very happy and content baby she never once woke in the night for a feed.
People said i was very lucky to have such a good baby others said it must be because i was happy and content throughout my pregnancy.

A year came and went we celebrated Nikita's first birthday and not long after her birthday we had an appointment come through for her to have her extra thumb removed.
Nikita would be put to sleep for the operation and be able to go home the next day.

We traveled the 30 miles to derriford hospital in Plymouth for the operation nikita was 18 months old and i was 6 months pregnant with my second child.
We were taken to the children's word where the nurses and doctors made us feel most welcome the procedure was explained to us she would have the thumb cut off and then they would put dissoluble stitches into the wound the procedure would take no longer then an hour and a half to complete.

This was done without complications the only hurdle we had to overcome next was nikita had to learn to use her thumb all over again which she did within a week of the operation.

On the 21st of november 1998 i gave birth to my second daughter we called her olivia the first thing we checked was her finger's and toes they were perfect no extra bits and no webbed toes and she weighed a very health 7lb 10oz.

Unlike Nikita she loved her food and woke constantly in the night people were not saying i was lucky anymore olivia certainly made up for nikita lots of sleepless nights.
Yet she was still a happy content baby during the day she has the most amazing big blue eyes and the face that would say butter wouldn't melt.
