The Dolphins of Pern is one of the books in the Dragonriders of Pern series of fantasy/science-fiction books (imagine a fantasy world with sci-fi roots which are gradually being unearthed by the characters.) Since all of the books of the Dragonriders of Pern series are so different, I'll be making lots of comparisons with other Dragonrider books to try to explain this one. This means that unfortunately readers with no experience of McCaffrey's world might find it hard to keep up, as the book deals indirectly with the immediate aftermath of the events in "Red Star Rising", and continues the story of some of the characters from "The Renegades of Pern" The book also gives an idea of what might be in store for us in "All the Weyrs of Pern".
If you're reading, or are about to read "The Renegades of Pern" you'll probably find some ...
Advantages: I think she gives another dimension in the Sci-Fi market Disadvantages: Sometimes accused of being for women/teenagers only.

I must admit, I've never tried to review an author before - So I hope the attempt doesn't go too badly!
AnneMcCaffrey is an American science fiction writer best known for her Dragonriders of Pern series. She was born in 1926, and so will be 82 this year (2008 as I write this review).
She was married, but eventually divorced her husband - A move which also then saw her move to Ireland, where eventually she also had a house built to her own design in County Wicklow.
AnneMcCaffrey was pretty unique, because she was pushing to write in what was a very heavily male dominated market. She was a single mother for a long period, struggling to make more than just an impact as a Sci-Fi writer.

Advantages: Good introductory to Sci FI Genre Disadvantages: Some areas are written in a simplistic style

Anne has effectively described the Hives background and their need for expansion throughout the galaxy, which lays a good foundation for the battle between the Talents and the Hive.
Some areas of the novel are written in a simplicstic style, and I belive that this would make for a good introdcution to SCI-Fi/Fantasy for children. ...
