The Xone VF1 is a high quality, analogue filter unit featuring an enhanced version of the legendary Xone filter circuits used in the award winning Xone mixer range. 1U rackmount unit with a good range of connections. Filters: three different filter types are provided: high-pass, band-pass and low-pass, which can be selected together to create further types - for example, high-pass and low-pass together create a notch filter. All of the filter controls are "soft switched" to prevent clicks, allowing them to be changed on the fly Resonance: this control allows the sharpness of the filter to be adjusted from a gentle roll-off for a subtle filter sound, to near oscillation at maximum. Automatic Resonance Control (ARC) monitors the output of the filter and automatically reduces the resonant peaks of high signal levels, thus minimising potentially system-damaging transients Mono/stereo: the filter can be configured as a stereo 2-pole (12dB/octave) or a mono 4-pole (24dB/octave) by selecting the Mono switch on the rear panel, without the need to re-patch Invert Filter: Another rear panel switch sums the inverted filter signal with the non-filtered input signal and routes the remainder to the TRS jack outputs; this can give some unusual and subtle sounds, especially if routed to an effects unit Valve: as well as the VCA filter the VF-1 also has a valve (tube) input stage with drive control, allowing the signal level through the valve to be progressively increased in order to create strong second harmonics, or taken all the way into clipping. This is a great tool for adding warmth to a mix or for fattening up thin, reedy bass sounds. Automatic gain reduction circuitry maintains a near constant output level as the overdrive control is increased Envelope Follower: this function with switchable release speed, allows the filter cut-off frequency to be modulated by the intensity of the input signal, and can be used to create some interesting effects with drum loops and bass lines. It can also be switched into the valve overdrive circuits to give intensity modulated overdrive LFO: the low frequency oscillator with square/triangle waveforms completes the modulation toolbox for the filter system MIDI: the VF-1 can send and receive MIDI, allowing the filter frequency, filter type, and on/off status to be remotely controlled or saved to a sequencer. It can be configured to operate in several different modes; for instance, to allow it to interface to our MIDI equipped XONE:92 DJ mixer, and another to track the filters to MIDI notes.
Advantages: Sound quality, build Disadvantages: Channel gains on the back of the unit, only 3 channels
...will notice that installing one of these in your system will definately make it punch out a crisper and more accurate sound through all ranges (low, mid & high).
Secondly, this mixer is buit like a brick - no wobbly buttons or faders, and it is this trademark of the Xone series which really shows when using the mixer. On top of this, the easy to use VCF filter which pretty much acts as a built in effects unit, is superb. I believe that this effect is all you really need, unlike the effects on any of the Pioneer mixers (most effects sound terrible on these).
Cons
It has always baffled me why Allen & Heath decided to put the line gain buttons on the back of the unit. The Aux buttons are found in the usual gain spot on the mixer. But saying this, once you get used to the location of the gain buttons (which does not take very long), mixing...

...is crisp and punchy, and it is always magnificently accurate through all ranges (low, mid and high). This is the main reason why clubs have begun installing Allen & Heath mixers into their systems.
The built in effects unit is also superb. The VCF filter is by far the best effect which has been included in any mixer over the past ten years. It makes the Pioneers built in effects unit look like a childs toy! The VCF filter is really easy to get used to, but very difficult to master which makes it challenging and a little different each time you use it.
Normally mixers' channels are normally split into three ranges, namely the low, mid and treble. But with the Xone:62, you get four ranges (low, low-mid, high-mid, high) which gives it far more playability and functionality than any other sub-£800 mixer. Another of its positive functions...

Advantages: Build quality, built in effects, sound Disadvantages: Not enough decent effects, sound is not as good as other newer mixers
...I have owned my DJM-500 for over 4 years now, and it has lasted the test of time and the battering I have given it. Still perceived as the original ultimate professional dj/club mixer, it has remained as popular as ever. Its build quality is superb, but I believe its sound is not as good as other newer alternatives.
I am now looking to buy a new mixer - so will I buy another of these or a similar Pioneer product? I think not. I believe the advantages of the Allen & HeathXone series outweigh Pioneer's mixers. Even so, I will still have a place in my heart for the DJM-500 as it was my very first mixer. I highly recommend this mixer to anybody who is starting out and want a mixer which is built like a brick and sounds good....

This review is based on my experiences with the Xone:32. It is not an in depth look at its specification as this is readily available from the Allen & heath website.
I bought this mixer about a year or so ago and it has been a faithful companion to me more
