I foolishly joined the Alliance and Leicester, having held a giro account with my husband for a number of years. They repeatedly failed to pay direct debits and standing orders for me when I set them up for payment, and this led to my receiving rather disturbing letters from people I owed money to at the time. When I complained they said it was my fault for not checking that the payments had gone out on time. I said that they were there to make sure everything was paid on time once the details were logged into their computers. The best thing I ever did was to leave them and go elsewhere. Better service, helpful staff, lower charges and bills paid when they are meant to be paid.

That was an appalling bit of customer care from them, I have the credit card form them and I very much dislike the way they split the dates for full payment at no interest, and partial payment incurring interest. They hardly give time for the statement to arrive and the check to be sent back. My sympathies. I wondered who you transferred to?
