After three weeks of phoning the branch each day my application was rejected. I was told that the Head Office would write to give me a reaosn, but they never did. I have now written to the Chairman and the Ombudsman to see their response. I know each bank has their own credi rating system, but along with my mortgage ... ...and an unsecured personal loan for 15,000 pounds! All of these other applications were approved and sent to me immediately. There is obviously something wrong with their credit scoring system.
Fortunately everything worked out in the end, I didn't lose the house I put an offer in for, as I got a mortgage with Skipton, who sorted everything out within 5 days and offer a much lower APR! ...

...I own shares in the Alliance and Leicester, I do feel that this opinion is fairly unbiased.
I have had four mortgages now with this bank (91,93,97,2000). The first was easy to arrange, the subsequent two were very difficult and I only stayed with the bank due to the punitive redemption penalties, therefore I was dreading approaching them again earlier this year for my current mortgage; I shouldn't have.
This time, I decided to use the Mortgage ... ...my convenience) was followed by some pre completed forms posted out to sign; the valuer was instructed and paid for over the phone by credit card, and my full mortgage offer was out within a fortnight of my first telephone call.
I did have a few glitches over the redemption of the old mortgage (being overcharged by one month's interest, however this was promptly returned when I flagged it up, along with an apology.
Overall if service is important ...
