Manufacturer's product description
Allied Telesis' AT-2451FTX PCI adapter offers a flexible network access solution in environments where 10Mbps fiber co-exists with 10/100Mbps copper cabling. This is a common occurrence in networks that deploy fiber to increase certain segment lengths or to protect data integrity in high emissions areas such as manufacturing. By having both 10Mbps fiber and 10/100Mbps copper connectors on a single card, network administrators need only open a PC case once and install the AT-2451FTX card. The PC may then be deployed and redeployed quickly and cost-effectively, regardless of the cabling connection. AT-2451FTX's onboard Managed Boot Agent (MBA) provides a wide set of industry-standard boot protocols, including PXE, NetWare NCP/IPX, IBM's RPL, traditional DHCP and BOOTP, supporting both BBS (BIOS Boot Specification) and non-BBS compliant PCs. Also available is an extensive set of utilities for boot ROM configuration, and access to Pre-OS and network boot image files.

Advantages: Flexibility, Smartsync Software Disadvantages: Simultaneous access to Mac and PC
...Not sure whether i was going for a Freecom NAS Hardrive or one of these, so read up a bit and ended up going for the more flexible approach that is the Netgear SC101.
It certainly didn't let me down. I plonked a 25gb seagate hardrive into it and ran the software on my laptop. plugged in the netgear sc101 into my wireless router and within 5mins my laptop had found the 250gb hardrive wireless and was now formatting.
The installation was certainly straight forward. Couple of things worth noting i didn't get the full 250gb from the drive infact i only got 232gb. No sweat i happy with 232gb.
You can assign an admin password so you don;t get anyone messing with your data and there is also an option of partitioning the drive and mapping the drives to as many drive letters as you wish.
It also comes with the smart sync software which...

Advantages: External networked Storage excellent for those big long backups, Save all your music and films to 1 place and share through out your network through a wireless or/and wired hub. Disadvantages: Slow spin up time, Software needs to be installed on computers using it,
...I bought the Netgear SC101 for one reason only, and that was to backup my main computer drive so I could re-install windows.
I ordered the SC101 along with two 250 gig H/Ds total cost - £199 , Okay so not exactly cheap but not exactly expensive either for 500 Gigs of storage. Mind you the two 250Gig drives set me back about £125, the netgear SC101 was about £67. Be very carefull what drives you use they HAVE to be ATA 6 standard, anything less and they will not work with the SC101 properly.
Before buying the SC101 I had done the usual and scoured the internet to read peoples reviews and work out whether this thing was going to be problematic or a good buy. The things I read were almost enough to deter me. But my experience of the `Toaster` as people call it are as follows.
On taking it out the box, I was mildly impressed. Looked good...
