Alliums are a member of the onion family. Yuk, I hear you say how can an onion be any good apart from being fried with sausages. Well you're in for a surprise with these.
These bulbs are hardy, very easy to grow and come up year after year and are in a variety of sizes and colours. They range from large such as Giganteum, a lilac variety which reaches 3 to 5 feet, to a variety under a foot tall such as Akaka or Karataviense. They are spring and summer flowering bulbs and the leaves should be allowed to die back to provide energy for the following year.
The flowers consist of many small star shape flowers often forming a large globe shape with most of them being pink, lilac or white or a yellow Allium Moly.
I think the most impressive are the tall ones such as Giganteum or Christophii but there are types for every size of garden. They can even be grown in containers for those without gardens.
All in all a very impressive bulb.
