Last week when I was at work, two of the salesman were having a 'heated discussion' (argument!) about whether or not you could drink Aloe Vera. I was more than happy to settle their argument by telling them that I drink it everyday! Although Aloe Vera is a member of the Lily family, it is very cactus like in its characteristics. There are over 240 different species of Aloe, growing mainly in the dry regions of Africa, Asia, Europe and America. Aloe Vera has been shown to have various beneficial effects on the body when taken in internally. Some of which are listed below.
Blood circulation - a number of constituents have beneficial effects on blood pressure and coagulation. Bone and joint disorders - due to its high mineral and amino acid content. Detoxification - amino acids assist the liver and kidneys. Laxative - It has a gentle laxative effect on the bowels. Skin care - moisturising and conditioning effects even when taken internally. Burns and Sunburn Great energy booster. Relieves digestive system disorders such as IBS, Candida, Colitis, Acid Indegestion. Effective for people suffering from stomach ulcers. Supports your Immune System to help you fight infection. Helps alleviate a wide range of allergies.
Aloe Vera contains over 20 minerals, all of which are essential to the human body. Aloe Vera has Vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, B12, C and E. Vitamins cannot be manufactured within the body, and some cannot be stored by the body, so it is necessary for the diet to sustain a continuous supply.
Aloe Vera was recommended to my mam by our local health and beauty shop as she was very lethargic all of the time. The lady told her that drinking Aloe Vera juice could help this situation. Around the time that my mam started to drink it I was also getting heavy colds every 6 - 8 weeks. Each time I needed to take at least three days, if not a week from school because I was so poorly. My mam had started to feel the benefits of the Aloe Vera so she thought it would be worth me giving it a go too. For the past 3 years I have been drinking Aloe Vera juice before my breakfast and I can honestly say I do not suffer from frequent heavy colds any more (fingers crossed!) I have had two colds this winter but on both occasions I managed to push myself and go to school. My mam also still drinks it every day and she feels better for it too. Obviously she does still get tired but it's not so bad through the day.
We buy our Aloe Vera juice from Holland and Barrett. We buy the 1000ml bottle but there is a smaller one available. It costs us £8.99 (£4.49 when they have their less than half price sale - which is when we usually buy it) and it lasts us for about a month. We drink the natural juice although you can get it in cranberry flavour.
Personally I think it tastes awful, but we always add it to some juice, usually pineapple or orange. Once added to the juice it just tastes like the juice itself with a slightly bitter taste. I prefer drinking it with orange juice but any juice is fine. The bottle recommends you take 15ml 1 -3 times per day either direct or with juice. Ingredients: Aloe Vera juice, preservatives, citric acid, malic acid and absorbic acid. NOT RECOMMENDED FOR INFANTS, PREGNANT OR BREASTFEEDING WOMEN. SUITABLE FOR VEGETARIANS AND VEGANS.
There is a wide range of aloe vera products available, including shampoo and skin care products. We have recently even started to use toilet roll with aloe vera in too. I'm not sure what this is supposed to (maybe it's just a way for manufacturers to make more money?) do but it is softer than the toilet roll we used to use.
I would recommend aloe vera juice. I can't be certain that I feel better because of the aloe vera juice (although I do think it has helped.) but it definitely hasn't made me any worse so I don't think I've got anything to lose!
Thanks for reading!
