Storyline :
Set during 2008, the story continues with Edward Carnby, the main protagonist from the original game, looking for answers to strange supernatural and bizarre phenomenon while trying to survive in New York City's Central Park which is where the main plot is. The game story centers around rumors, allegations, and suspicious activity in tunnels found below the park. Throughout the game, Carnby will be assisted by Sarah Flores, a mouthy female art dealer, and Theophile Paddington, an elderly man who has knowledge about the weird happenings in Central Park, and an old friend of Carnby's. The main antagonist is another elderly man named Crowley.

Controls (for PC version) are quite frustrating at first as it uses both keyboard and mouse, it takes sometime for players to get used to the controls. Players will be provided with shortcuts key, such as "H" key to open healing wound screen and such, 1-4 keys can be used to allocated favorite equipment shortcut keys (players are given few slots to set his/her favorite combination of weapon for example, gun with flashlight, flashlight with blow torch, etc), after awhile the controls are not so bad.
Alone In The Dark has an interchangeable first and third person camera view, with a mix of puzzle solving and action gameplay. The player can switch to first-person view anytime. The environment plays a big part of core gameplay as players can interact with nearly any object in the game (such as chairs, pipes, wood, insect spray etc.) which then can be used as a melee weapon. It can also be used to smash in doors, and knock objects over. Fire is generated in real-time, as objects can be set alight by holding it over the fire, and it can be extinguished. If the fire isn't extinguished fast enough, the flames will continue to regenerate. Players can pick up objects, and combine to make different styles of weapons (such as insect spray with lighter will create a blow torch type weapon, liquor with handkerchief will create Molotov cocktail) however only some objects can be combined with others. Any object which is shot at or thrown are one time use only (gun needs bullets). Some combustible items can be thrown then shot to create explosion.
If the player takes damage, open wounds appear on Edward's outfit. Players must use a medical spray, or if the wounds are too deep use bandages to heal themselves. Similar to most Survival Horror games, if Edward takes too much damage, the screen will flash red, and a heartbeat sound will be heard indicating that he is bleeding out.
Fire plays an important role in game, as most of the enemy Edward will encounter can only be killed permanently with fire. So no matter how hard you try to beat, chop, shot these sort of enemies will raise back up again until you burn them. Fire illuminates dark areas too as it should :-) . Water, electric cable and such can help killing enemies faster (also can kill your character in an instant too). So this interactive environment feature plays a very important role for Edward to survive.
Inventory is limited, Edward can only carry a number of items under his jacket, items are drop-able in case players decided another item is more important to have than the other. Items have limit usage of course, such as Flashlight needs battery, gun needs bullet, sprays will eventually used up, etc.
There will be episodes where Edward has to drive a car to escape, gameplay will turn into car racing game type, I find it to be the most difficult and most depressing part of the game he..he..he..he.
Graphic :
Graphic is Excellent, rendered beautifully (may need strong graphic card at least 512 Mb to turn on all in game graphic feature). Lighting, Dust, Fire, Mist, Water are quite realistic. Any burning objects the player carries, will illuminate a dark place in a flickery way like real fire would.
Sound :
Not bad, voice acting not too shabby. The music in Alone in the Dark is scored by Olivier Derivière, the same person who scored ObsCure and ObsCure II. It also includes the female choir The Mystery of Bulgarian Voices. In this game, Olivier did not use a live orchestra; instead he used virtual instruments and samplers to create a realistic orchestral sound. I kind of like the soundtrack myself, as I think it is nicely done.
Overall :
Not disappointing, but may require a strong PC to play properly which is the drawback of this game. But well, it's a recently published game, so not surprising. Try it out if you like survival horror game that's more than just shot or chop them up gameplay.
Advantages: Scary, first in the genre. Disadvantages: Dated graphics, control could be better.
ALONE IN THE DARK
-----------------
The year 1996, and the first Resident Evil game was released, the original Survival Horror game!!
Nope sorry that wasnt the first was it? No this game was, four years before! way back in the dark ages of 1992.
Yep for all of those people that thought Resident Evil created a genre, you are all sadly mistaken, what R.E did was 'borrow' a lot of ideas from this game and add a few nicer graphics.
This game was ... ...workings of H.P. Lovecraft.
Set in the 1920's, you are Edward Carnby, a supernatural detective, who decides to go into the house of a man that has supposedly commited suicide. All you know is that you have recieved a letter telling you to look near the piano!
After some research Carnby finds out that the house has witnessed a lot of murders and hauntings, so he enters the house and goes into the attic, this is where you come in.

Advantages: good puzzles, quite creepy, good storyline, revolutionary in its day Disadvantages: looks dated, too easy to die, too much saving/not enough playing
...grandfather of all arcade/adventure games, Alone In The Dark is a title which may be getting on a bit in years, but is still hugely playable and rather creepy at that. Inspired by the works of H. P. Lovecraft, its a horror adventure game set in a spooky mansion filled with all kinds of shambling horrors. The owner has commited suicide supposedly but it all looks rather suspicious although the police are more than happy to just close the case. You ... ...easy task at all.
Alone in the Dark was revolutionary when it was released with its polygonal character graphics and the like but looks decidedly dated now. Fans of such games as Resident Evil will be disappointed by the lack of graphical quality but the story and gameplay are still great if you can rise above this. There is a heavy adventure element to the game, puzzles being mainly inventory based or through reacting with the environment in some ...

Advantages: Great and haunting 3d design for such an old game, free! and the music is sooo scary Disadvantages: Rather limited graphic detail, maybe slightly old
In this game you choose between two detectives to play(it really makes no difference, just a man and a woman who looks like a duck). You are investigating the suicide of a man in an old house.
The FMV sequence shows you getting dropped off outside the house and advancing into it towards the attic where the man supposedly died. Surprisingly nothing happens to you as you walk all through the house and finally arrive in the attic.
This is where the ... ...keys to move around, enter to select action(ie. look, kick, fire etc), and spacebar to do the action.
All you were left from this mans suicide is a letter telling you to look closely at the piano...
Suddenly a strange duck-like monster smashes through the window and begins to attack you...
Soon you find out that this place is not all it appears to be and that some vicious creature has wrapped itself around the house...
You get to explore the ...

Advantages: Scary, still playable, lots to do Disadvantages: Graphics a little dated
Firstly, this is not a GAME REVIEW. Its a good 2 minute read - an opinion. If you want a professional game review. Open up google and do a search for "alone in the dark" game review. Also, for those members who are planning on sending daft tips on how to write game reviews. I want to to clearly look at this. The whole point of ciao is to have an opinion on a game. Not to write a fully fledged review. All my opinions are written, so that you can read ... ...wasting peoples time. Saying that sorry to have to waste your time with this... but blame the twits who miss the point of ciao completely. For the rest of you respectable, intelligent members, here is my opinion:
This game was really scary, played late at night(why? because you were too addicted to stop playing). I used to play it on a black and white monitor, which made it even worse. It is not scary anymore. It is also dated.

Advantages: Lots of game play, option of 2 characters Disadvantages: Fustrating
Alonein the Dark the New Nightmare is apparently the latest in a set, as of yet i've been unable to find others so if anyone has an info please let me know.
The game starts by showing a brief video type play showing how Carnby gets involved. You are then presented with the choice of either being Carnby or Aileen Cedric, if you choose to be Carnby good luck as I have not managed to get very far with him at all (so if anyone has any hints they would be much appreciated).
The storyline behind the game is basically you need to discover the secret of the family who live on the island and who were supposedly a bit crazy but genius, well that is Carnaby’s mission anyway. Aileen on the other hand thinks one of the nutty professors may be her father.
Whereas if you choose to be Aileen it seems you do not have to fight many as ...
In this game, our hero Ed Carnby is in the Wild West to save a damsel in distress. It brought back the puzzle element to the action adventure genre of the time with a vengeance and improved on many of the features of the excellent AITD1 and 2.
The difficulty options are impressive, with the level you choose making difference's on Carnby's strengths, the enemy's strengths and the amount of ammo available, a system so admirable many games have followed suit including Resident Evil.
The music captures the atmosphere perfectly and the digitised speech brings new personality to the characters, who can now also jump. The most major problem I found is the collision detection. To use an item, you have to be pixel-perfectly aligned with it for the interaction to be accepted. Trouble is, you are rarely warned that you are in the wrong position ...
Advantages: Lovely graphics and sound as well as a strong plot. Disadvantages: Can only save with the rare "Charm of Saving"
This is the 4th game in the alonein the dark series; any of you who saw the graphics on the first will be glad to know that they're better much, much better but before I get into that a bit about the plot.
Edward Carnby takes over the case his best friend was investigating on Shadow Island because his best friend died whilst investigating there. He goes to find out the secret of the family who live there. Edward needs to take an assistant with him so he takes Aileen Cedric who is a specialist in Indian languages. Aileen is hoping to find a set of stone tablets and scripts on the island, and she tells Edward this whilst they are on the way there. Whilst on the plane a monster attacks it and Aileen and Edward are forced to abandon the plane and as a result they land on different parts of the Island.
You can now choose which ...

Manufacturer's product description
There's something strange and frightening happening in the middle of New York City's Central Park; something whispered to have been intentionally kept secret; something that players are compelled to explore in Alone in the Dark.Known today as a safe haven for New Yorkers yearning for relief from the stresses of their chaotic metropolis, history records that Central Park was built on a useless swamp, yet as the New York City skyline hurtled towards the sky over the last 150 years, making the city the most expensive real estate in the world, the park has remained untouched. Why? Civic pride? Perhaps, but the recent strange happenings in and around the park are casting doubt on that, doubts that require investigating. The return of an iconic seriesParanormal PI Edward Carnby..Stunningly spooky views of NYC..The odd wildlife of Central Park..A whole new inventory system..Enter Edward Carnby, Paranormal InvestigatorDespite the title, Alone in the Dark is actually the fifth game in a series that dates back to 1992 and centers around the experiences of Edward "the reptile" Carnby. A paranormal investigator by trade, Carnby is looking for answers to the strange events and horrific creatures reported in and around the park, but gets more than he bargained for when all the mysteries and terrors of the park spill out over the course of one apocalyptic night. It's the player's task to avoid the new frightening dangers of the park as you search for the answers to what these supernatural occurrences mean and why they are happening.Gameplay Based on Full Player ImmersionPacked full of action and vivid in its realism Alone in the Dark goes to the extreme to keep players engaged and immersed by plunging them into the heart of the action in real-time at every turn and challenging them to survive using full movement control. The goal here is to allow players to do or at least feel that they can do more or less whatever is possible in real life, within the game.Need to avoid a blast of steam or an eruption of fire that has shot up in your path? You can simply side-step it or you can handle the obstacle with a little more panache by using the environment around you, for example by swinging around it using reachable pipes or wires. In another situation you may be challenged by attacking monsters. No problem. You can take the path of least resistance, again by side-stepping them or placing an obstacle between yourself and them, but if you are feeling like taking out a little aggression you can pick up a board, chair, box, etc. and have at it. Nearly anything that you come across that would be usable in real life is usable in game and can be wielded in several different ways.In addition, game developer Eden Studios has done away with a few in-game conventions in favour of real life upgrades. Instead of old-fashioned health bars Alone in the Dark uses realistic body damage and physiological effects to show players how much damage has been done to Carnby by the new dangerous nightlife of Central Park. Basically this means if Carnby has been taking a licking he's going to be a little bloody. Monsters use sensory perception of all kinds to find their victims, so players need to keep aware of Carnby's physical state, as well as the impact he has on his surroundings. Also gone are traditional inventory systems that take players out of the game while you switch or check items in your possession, replaced by an in-game inventory system where items are carried in the folds of Carnby's trench coat. This allows you to stay in the action the whole time. Sticking with the realism theme, the number of items that Carnby can carry is limited, but since ingenuity is built into the system, items can be combined or their uses altered, mostly with tape, so players can adjust as challenges arise.TV Style Intensity That Keeps You HookedBuilt around a unique television style episodic narrative game structure, the storyline of Alone in the Dark is split into a number of distinct 30-40 minute episodes, doled out one at a time as you play. This new way to progress through the storyline ensures that players can enjoy the game regardless of the amount of time they have available without ever feeling lost. Each time a saved game is launched, the episode will begin with a video summary of the previous episode to quickly re-immerse the player in the story, removing the need to remember where you were or what you were doing at the end of your last play session. In addition, every episode will also close with a nail-biting, cliff-hanger ending to rattle players' nerves. And when you choose to leave the game, a video teaser of the next episode will play to leave players always wanting more.Vivid Photographic RenderingEven on a bad day, and this will be a bad one, Central Park and New York City are something to see. With Game developer Eden's proprietary Twilight technology and rendering engine, players can expect to see everything from the City's famous landmarks to the manifestations of the evil that have bee
