There is a comment early on in Alpesh Patel's superbNet Tradingwhich neatly undercuts ... more
every hyped misconception about online trading
held by the public and perpetuated by the media:
"There is no more a secret to[it] than there is to
buying books from Amazon ... The mechanics are
relatively easy, the skill [is] knowing what to
buy and when and then when to sell." The same
progression can be seen in Patel's
classic-in-waiting series of books. WhereTrading
Onlineconcentrated on mastering the mechanism,Net
Tradingfocuses on the systems, strategies,
products and psychology essential to profitable
trading.Stocks, futures and options are Patel's
products of choice--all accessible to the average
investor and with similar risk profiles--and
Section three's extensive Online Trader Strategies
guide is one of the highlights of the book. Patel
is a technical analysis man and his lucid account
of Japanese Candlesticks and Bollinger Bands, to
name but two, will win many new converts to the
joys of charting in predicting price action. His
work on trading systems is essential reading. Only
the shorter section on psychology disappoints,
lacking the depth of earlier chapters. Patel has
already written extensively on the subject
(seeMind of a Trader) which perhaps explains the
somewhat glossed version we have here.Buy and hold
investors beware;Net Tradingis not for you. The
author's passion is for rapid-fire dealing in the
short to medium term, including day trading (see
the excellent Section 4, complete with warning
stamp). Stressful, yes, risky, yes, but as he
states with characteristic exuberance, "Great! I
can have a whale of a time in my Ferrari--when
I've lost all my hair and incontinence and
impotence are a nightly fear." It's enough to send
Buffett disciples spluttering into their cherry
coke.Net Tradinghas an easy charm and assured
delivery which will benefit beginners and
experienced online traders alike. It is
embellished throughout with the kind of detail
that madeTrading Onlinesuch a great read. Patel
cuts and pastes snippets from online chat rooms
and mixesit up with expert advice from the likes
of Jon Najarian and Bernard Oppetit. He is
encyclopedic in his guide to the best online
trading sites and brokers. IfNet Tradingis any
indication of the quality we can expect from the
nascent FT.com book imprint, the future is bright
indeed. --Iain Campbell

My time with Pi
Review of Life of Pi - Yann Martel by  eaglesas

Advantages: Totally original, amazingly emotional, truly a wonderful book.
Disadvantages: You will not find anything as good as this in a while...

...... ---------------------------------- Life of Pi is a book that is roughly split into two, no three sections. These three sections are in fact the eponymous storyline, that of the life of Pi. The first is the childhood of Piscene Molitor Patel... Given his name from a swimming pool of all things! Pi Patel enjoys a magical childhood because of a number of different reasons. Firstly there is the fact that his father is head of the zoo! Naturally this gives him much time to interact with the animals and often they are personified, as children are wont to do. Secondly - the book is given a magical reasonance mostly because of this - Pi Patel has a massive sense of wonder at the whole world, and frequently interacts with the many religious figures in his town. This section of the book is filled with wonderful sights, sounds, smells, tastes and touches of India during Pi... Read review

Stunning Tale of Survival and Imagination
Review of Life of Pi - Yann Martel by  buzios

Advantages: A unique, beautifully written and highly imaginative book
Disadvantages: It didn't make me believe in God

...For those who don't know then I will start by pointing out that "The Life of Pi" by Canadian author Yann Martel won the Man Booker Prize this year. However for those of you that might feel intimidated by the thought of reading a Booker Prize winning novel, don't be put off! This book is a very easy read but at the same time is stunning in it's imagery, use of language and sheer damn good storytelling. This is the tale of Piscine Molitor Patel (or 'Pi' for short), a 16 year old Indian boy who is shipwrecked and finds himself on a lifeboat with a Bengal Tiger called Richard Parker, a Hyena, an Orang Utan and a Zebra with a broken leg. The book is the story of his fight for survival during his 227 days before being rescued. OK - it sounds a bit strange, which is exactly what I thought when I read some of the short reviews elsewhere... Read review

Only you can save mankind: GET REAL!
Review of Only You Can Save Mankind - Terry Pratchett by  rd123

Advantages: very funny, futaristic, funny characters!
Disadvantages: VERY BORING in some places, HARD TO FOLLOW

...it was easy to read. It was like a mystery story with computers. It had lots of shooting towards the end. This is my favourite section of the book: "Mr. Patel took the view that once the transparent wrapper had come off, even the pope wouldn't be allowed to return the game, not even if he got god to come in as well. This is because he had met people like Wobbler before." I like this section because it describes the characters very well in a short amount of words. It shows that Mr. Patel was very cheap and also it shows that Wobbler had a bad reputation with Mr.Patel because of the piracy he has done. However, I found the book to be hard to follow because you couldn't tell if Johnny was dreaming or if he was actually playing the game. It was also boring in places and not much was happening which made me very tired and fed up. Although the book wasn... Read review
