ALPHA THE FIRST TIME AROUND

I remember reading an advert in the London Evening Standard about Alpha Telecom in 1996. The advert said that calls to India were 26p/minute. This was amazing, as the call charge to India using Unicom was 37p/minute.

Like a prat I immediately signed up to Alpha Telecom. When I registered I was given loads of documentation. One of the leaflets said that the call charge to ...

ALPHA AGAIN

Last August my uncle told me that he used Alpha Telecom. My uncle is probably the most social person I know. During the week at least 2 families stay with him. At weekends he visits friends all over the country. So he knows what he is talking about.

My father and uncle have not spoken since 1989. Both are in their late 60s and their behaviour ... more

Not Worth It

Advantages: Cheaper than BT
Disadvantages: Not competitive to other services/phone cards available, and a fuss to open the account

...to open an account with Alpha Telecom for their prepaid service. I noticed them due to the high number of adverts on the tube, although to begin with the calls seem to be sufficiently low priced. However, by the time I made several calls, a £20 pound credit on my account was very quickly used up. However much they boast about cheap call rates etc, I got tricked in that they had different rates for different access numbers, etc etc, so although they ...

Quick review of Alpha Telecom

BUYERS BEWARE Alpha encourages users to top up large amounts of money to qualify for their free £5 of credit. What they do not do is make it absolutely clear i.e. not in small print - that if you don't use your account in a 6 month period, they will close your account and keep your money. I have tried on numerous occasions to get them to send automated emails to their customers to let them know when they are nearing the 6 months. As an IT manager I know that this is not very hard to do, so why haven't they implemented this - because they want to keep getting money for nothing - there can be no other reason. ...

Quick review of Alpha Telecom

BUYER BEWARE ! ! ! ! ! I was told by an alpha telecom customer service person on the telephone that calls to India would be 9p / minute. This is also the rate advertised on their website. When I checked my account I realised that I was charged a staggering 46p / minute! When I called to complain I was told that this was because of my priceplan, but failed to explain why I was not advised to go onto the most cost effective priceplan. I was told they would not remedy this situation that occured because of misinformation. A mistake on their behalf that costed me about £150. Any advise? ...

ALPHA IS CRAP

Advantages: NONE
Disadvantages: Many including more expensive calls than other calling card companies, don't just compare with BT

I used to use Alpha Telecoms when their calling card. I have to say the service sucks!!! BIG TIME! The call quality was TERRIBLE and when I called customer services I was hung on a LONG queue, and in the end I was CUT OFF! I was fuming! It was not a freephone number either! So people, DO NOT join Alpha! If you really need a long distance carrier, consider First Call (my current long distance calling card people, they offer very CHEAP and QUALITY ...

Alpha Telecom's rates to India lower than competitor's

Advantages: Some international rates are much lower than competitor's. Look at India: 4.50 p!!!
Disadvantages: Few advertising about offers and promotions

I first heard about Alpha Telecom from a friend of mine some years ago. From my point of view, Alpha's offers and promotions are very interesting and international rates (especially to India, my main interest) are much lower than competitor's! Joining up was easy. I simply visited their web site at www.alphatelecom.co.uk and filled out their application form. I was then given an account number with a chosen pin and can now dial international numbers ...

They have also just renewed the website. Now it is much more friendly! Look at their call charge to India: 4.50 p is amazing! …and it works! I can now call my sister much more! J. Khan ...

Cheapest for International

Advantages: Cheapest. Great line quality
Disadvantages: Occasionally unavailable without prior warning

I chose Alpha Telecom because it was the cheapest card I found for calling internationally. I call Sweden a lot. I get charged 2p a minute for this at all times. Similar cheap rates are available for most other countries. Check their website for more info: http://www.alphatelecom.co.uk/ The line quality is always as good as BT. It saves me a lot of money using Alpha rather than getting stung by BT! It's fairly straight-forward to open up an account with them and top it up when required. As with all of the prepaid calling cards I have used, the level of service is not as good as you'll get from BT. I use Alpha telecom about 4 times a week. It's probably a couple of times a month that I am unable to use the card. I dial the number and wait - then nothing happens. My advice would be to open up one account with Alpha ...

Cheap International and Mobile call rates

Advantages: cheap and easy
Disadvantages: cheapest local rate only applies to weekends

Having used most of the leading names like Planet Talk, Onetel, Alpha Telecom, etc for my frequent International calls I have switched over to Telediscount for the last year and have not regretted it. Using their access number I can now call abroad for the cost of a local rate which is using the 0845 access number at 4p per minute daytime, 2p evenings and 1p weekends. I usually rush in a few calls in the mornings before going off to work because of the time difference abroad. Needless to say I can now afford chatting for a little longer when it is only 1p a minute, if I time it right! I programme their access no 08452 445 445 on my phone to make it easier for dialing. I also make alot of necessary calls to mobiles from my landline and the cheapest rate in the day and evenings was via Superline at about 18p a minute which is still ...

go bananas on long distance calls

Advantages: a lot of talktime - value for money!
Disadvantages: no warning tone for time running out

. However, with Go Bananas I found a £5 card could give me an average of 23 minutes of talk time to Pakistan which was excellent value for money! I've compared the talk time with various other cards and found that Go Banans definitely gives me the most. The service is easy to use and as normal you dial the main number and then the special card number followed by the pin number which can be found on the back of each card. Reception is also pretty clear and better than others like the hot card! Also, each time you want to check your balance you will find that the go bananas card will not magically "eat up" your credit as I have annoyingly found out with many others. As with most phone cards, the go bananas card has an expiry period of 90 days. The only disadvantage of this card is that there is no pre-pay arrangement like Alpha ...
