In the box you get 2 x Satellite speakers, 1 x Subwoofer, 1 x Wired Remote Control with stand, all required wiring, Instruction Manual and a quick connect card (very useful).
Sound Quality: Upon initial setup this system would appear to be a bit lacking, but once you’ve tweeked with the controller on the sub and the various media settings on your PC it turns into a monster of a system.
The sub makes the floor vibrate if the volume is up high and makes gaming really good, but the combination for music playing is also phenomenal. They combine crispness and bass very well.
A combination of high performance microdrivers and ported dual subwoofer drivers is the technology that makes this system so good.
Don’t be fooled into thinking that because they are slimline that the speakers don’t pack a punch - Each speaker has two 1” neodymium micro drivers.
The sub itself has two 4” long-throw woofers and is in a well-built wooden cabinet.
Design: Fantastic to look at and very well built. The speakers are mounted on cast alloy stands and look very designer and very expensive. I couldn’t believe how little needed to be paid for such quality.
Ease of Installation / Instruction Manual: They come with a very well written user manual which satisfied my needs. It also comes with a ‘Quick Connect Card’ that enables you to be up and running in a flash. Everything is colour coded so it makes it easy to install and the diagrams are very helpful indeed.
Range of Extra Features / Functions: The product also comes with a (wired) remote controller with simple, yet useful on/off and master volume operations. It has its own cast alloy stand too for on the desktop. A wireless remote would have been nice as I tend to use my laptop in the garden at BBQ’s with all attached, but very good additional perk all the same.
Manufacturers Support: I haven’t needed to contact Altec with regards to this product, but I have looked on their .com website and this is very useful. You can download manuals/info/Q&A etc and their site is also very well designed like their product.
Overall Verdict (And Value for Money): The MSRP in USA is $99.95 according to Altec Lansing themselves which I think is very reasonable for what you get. I can’t remember how much I paid in GBP sorry.
Personally this is an outstanding bit of kit to slap onto a PC, worthy of any PC where sound is imperative (gaming/music etc). I’ve never ever had such an expensive set of speakers, but to me they are worthy of that money for their sheer brilliance.
I would however say for the average ‘bit here bit there’ user they won’t prove value for money if all the sound you ever listen to is Windows sounds.
