Amaryllis

Amaryllis! What a lovely word! I love the way it rolls from the mouth; it was a popular Greek name for women in ancient times. I would have loved to be called such a romantic sounding name as Amaryllis. Amaryllis or Hippeastrum? What is in a name? Well the true Amaryllis Belladonna is ... Read review

The wonder of Amaryllis.

Advantages: Almost grows while you watch it, beautiful flowers in the middle of winter
Disadvantages: I can't think of any.

...Amaryllis.

Amaryllis or Hippeastrum?

What is in a name? Well the true Amaryllis Belladonna is a different bulb altogether. This Amaryllis has Hippeastrum as it's botanical name, which means Knight Star, another romantic sounding name I think.

So, what is it?

A flowering bulb.

Flowering bulbs include some of my favourite flowers and plants, this one I don't generally plant ...
...compost. Often when you buy amaryllis they come in a box with a small bag of compost and sometimes even a pot. My mum has had a couple though that fell over when planted in the supplied pot so now I always plant them in a pot a bit bigger than suggested as this gives them more stability. Stand the bulb on the layer of compost and fill the rest of the pot round the sides of the bulb. Now this is where Amaryllis differs from most of the garden bulbs ... more

Amaryllis /hippeastrum Amaryllis belladonna is a bulbous plant and, comes from South Africa it has 6 to 12 flowers on a solid flower stem it has only one species in its genus. However it gets confused with Hippeastrum (scientific name), Amaryllis is its common name. The hippeastrum comes from South Africa also, and has 4 to 6 large flowers on a hollow stem. It also is a bulbous plant. The Hippeastrum has several species. There are a lot of cultivars ...

THE ONLY PLANT I'VE NEVER KILLED

Advantages: Easy to look after, inexpesnive
Disadvantages: Cand drown it if not careful, maybe an acquired taste

...for one. The Amaryllis (Hippeastrum). For years as a child my mother had a row of these on the window sill at home and they were affectionately known as "the Triffids" due to their appearance and they always seemed to yield impressive flowers without too much tending. So I decided to have a go myself. I bought one from Woolworths that came complete with ceramic pot and compost in a kit for £3.99 but you can buy just the separate bulbs from garden/homeware ...

Oh dear - I'm not green-fingered

Advantages: Should require little care
Disadvantages: Mine isn't soing too much

Recently, due to being virtually housebound through illness and having a lack of 'time-fillers', I've started a little gentle indoor gardening! I have to be careful as I suffer from bad hayfever and similar allergies so my choice of plants has to bear this in mind. So far I have had great success with the foolproof Amaryllis (Hippeastrum) which I like to call my "triffid" because it has that look about it! However, a while ago, maybe a month or so, I bought a ready potted Hyacinth plant from Tesco's for £2.99. It was in it's young stages with no blooms and just a little foliage. I've watered it (not too much) and given it "Miracle -gro" but now I'm lost! It has definitely shot up in terms of leaf growth, foliage and height but has only partially bloomed and now these appear to be dying off before they've reached their full ...
