After years of playing the credit card merry go round of balance transfers, 0% offers, and free gifts, it was time to cut down my credit cards. At present I have the Nationwide visa cashback card and the Amazon mastercard. The card was launched back last year on thier website, and I was attracted to the loyalty programe and the 0% offers.
Without going into the fine print ,these are the main features:-
Type of card Mastercard
Card administration Halifax plc If you are registered for Halifax online accounts you can use the same login and password as your bank account.
0% for 9 months on balance transfers -up to 2% balance transfer fee.
0% for 6 month on purchases
15.9% APR
1 point for every £1 spent with Amazon
0.5 point for every £1 spent elsewhere
Once you get 1500 points you receive a £15 Amazon Gift certificate.
Applying ----------- On the main Amazon page you will find a small section near the bottom lefthand side with the Amazon card logo, if you click on this you can get all the relavent information, with a side menu for terms and conditions etc. Once you click through this ,the second page has the summary points and an "apply" button. Once you click this button a new window is opened and this is Halifax plc . The application pages are pretty standard , and take about 5-10 minutes to complete. Halifax were fairly prompt sending out the application form, and the card. I did a balance transfer from my Barclaycard which was done on application this was completed on return of the signed application, so a smooth operation with no hicups.
Using the card --------------------- Now this card really only works for you if you use Amazon alot. I do, for those of you who just buy books and cd's there is alot you can get from Amazon. I spend upwards of £200 pounds per month, on items as diverse as Brita water filter cartridges to Dirt Devil Vacuum cleaner bags, plus all my computer supplies. With my other expenses put on this card it works out I get a £15 voucher every other month.
Operating Card --------------------- Being registered with Halifax I use the same login as for my Online banking which is helpful. On Amazon you can service your card from the "My Account" section of the main page, from there it opens the Halifax window again ( all logos are Amazon) Once logged on you are at the summary page which shows your latest transactions, last payment, loyalty points, credit limit. To the side are all your options, where you can view statements, check transactions, change credit limit, make online payments. As a Halifax customer it would be nice to access the card from my Halifax account which you can't. They say it's Amazons choice. Amazon say that they moniter customer accounts to improve service, but that is my only moan. Statements are usually out by the 10th of the month for payment by the end of month for previous months purchases, as mentioned before you can make online payments or use the postal service, there is also a direct debit facility. Once you reach your 1500 points Amazon will send you an e-mail with your voucher code, which you enter on your next purchase with them. Your statement tells you when points have been converted into a voucher , which normally gets e-mailed about a week after you pay that statement.
Summary ------------- I have had no problems with this card and provider. It is competetive on rates and promtional features with other cards available. If you buy from Amazon this maybe for you.
