As I've mentioned in previous op., we have one of those kids pools in our garden that is just big enough - at a push - for adults to swim in.
With the wonderful weather we've had lately I've had every child in the neighbourhood in at some point, plus two strapping sons and hubby. So I thought I ought to buy some aftersun to go with the numerous SPF creams I have on hand,to cool the burning bodies.
In my local Superdrug I grabbed some Ambre Solaire which I've bought before for holidays. It was on offer at £4.99 for a tube containing 150ml. Think it's £6.99 at Boots.
It was in the usual blue aftersun container favoured by many different manufacturers.
It wasn't until I got home that I saw that it wasn't any bog standard after sun that I'd bought, but a tan maintainer.
It promised to soothe and moisturise which is what I'd bought it for, and to enhance a natural tan and contained glycerol plus vitamin E and a self tanning agent.
This wasn't what I'd intended to buy (always seem to do my shopping in a rush and get the first thing to come to hand) but it was aftersun so I thought I would stick with it.
On the back of the tube is the question "is after sun tan maintainer right for you" with the answer "yes, if your skin has been exposed to the sun, after sun helps prolong and intensify your tan".
It states it contains low levels of a self tanning ingredient which subtly deepens and enhances tan so it lasts longer.
It promises to hydrate the skin, sooth and moisturise to prevent peeling.
Advises to use on clean skin, avoid eyebrows and hairline and wash hands after application.
Use daily during the first week and once or twice a week thereafter.
As the sun seems to reflect off me and I never get a tan, I was a bit disappointed in my choice of aftersun. I've also deliberately bought some of these low level tanning agent things and they've had no effect at all.
My attempts at fake tans have always been disastrous so I felt resigned to being pale and interesting.
However, I've applied the after sun to those more blessed than me, who already have tans and they agreed it smelled pleasant and cooled and moisturised well.
As I've been on lifeguard duty for much of the week to prevent little dears from drowning one another, I've got extremely hot, but not burnt, but after bathing later in the day, I've rubbed the Ambre Solaire on instead of my usual body lotions, in the hope of cooling down.
The tan maintainer has a pleasant smell, rubs in well and leaves the skin feeling very soft.
After using for the first time I noticed the next day that I had assumed a more healthy hue. My milk bottle white legs had changed subtley and were no longer day glo white but actually had a hint of colour.
I've used it several times now and though by no means have I acquired a deep tan I do actually look as though I have a hint of colour with the advantage of no orange ankles and streaks associated with all the fake tans I've tried.
I've also found from reading the blurb on the tube that this is now Garnier Ambre Solaire. So this might be off putting for any that have seen any of the diabolical hair care adverts that they've put their name to. However, I advise to ignore all the awful things they produce and try this after sun. You never know, you might like it.
They've very kindly included a telephone number on the container for if you have any questions.
For those who feel they may need to know more before giving it a go the numbers are -
08453990404 for the UK and 1850604404 for Eire.
I have been pleasantly surprised at how good this product is and would recommend it to anyone like myself with a deathly pallor. So if you want to cheat and make yourself look sunkissed this is definitely worth a try. .
