"Creamy Yummy and Convenient"

During my boyhood I was virtually weaned on Ambrosia creamed Rice. My maternal grandmother loved it and since she was the matriarchal figure in our household, her word and views were not to be questioned. We frequently had Ambrosia for dessert at lunch time, at dinner time and sometimes at breakfast time with a dollop of raspberry or strawberry jam.

Ambrosia Ltd was founded in Devon by Alfred Morris in 1917. This was a time of war, food shortage and rationing and the new company was to make a rich baby food from the full cream Devon milk produced on farms around the Lifton area. Later on in the 1930s Ambrosia pioneered rice pudding in cans as a convenient food; this was their famous Creamed Rice Pudding, large quantities of which were to be distributed by the Red Cross during the dark days of World War 1. It seems the troops loved the stuff!

When World War II finished, Ambrosia, marketed their rice pudding in a big way and the product become enormously popular. The product comes in a colourful can in blue and yellow with a picture of undulating Devon countryside and the Ambrosia logo embossed on the can. The ingredients include Full Cream Milk (from Devon), Whey, Rice and Sugar and the most popular size is the 425 gr can. However, since being acquired by Uniliver Bestfoods UK, the company also produce single serve pots to meet the emerging consumer trend towards snacks and casual eating. The canned products are widely available in grocers and supermarkets at around 60-70 pence.

In addition to Creamed Rice Pudding, Ambrosia, also produce canned Custards,Creamed Semolina, other creamed products and savoury products including Macaroni Pudding and more recently have started producing milk shakes. The year 2000 saw the launch of Ambrosia Organic Creamed Rice.

Ambrosia Creamed Rice Pudding is the pioneer in canned rice puddings and is justly renowned in Britain. It is a thoroughly yummy, creamy, dessert which is delicious hot or cold. It can, incidentally, be microwaved should you be short on time and preparation time for conventional heating is less than 5 minutes. It is a mighty fine, low-fat product, which gets a big thumbs-up from this old reviewer!
