Ambrosia Devon Custard is something that I only discovered a few years ago. My mother always made Custard with powder, which was very tasty I have to admit, but like my most Mothers she had perfected the art, and alas when I gave it a try I ended up with more than just a few lumps. I also recall mixing the powder in a Pyrex jug and having to leave it overnight to soak in washing up liquid. Thankfully due to Ambrosia those memories are now all in my past. The Product Ambrosia Devon Custard for those of you not familiar with the product is ready made Custard in a tin. It comes in a round tin ... more

OK now I don’t come from England and truth be told I have spent very little time there as a whole but due to England being the biggest part of the British Isles I figure that I have a very good understanding of English culture. One thing I do not understand though is Devon and by understand I mean is it renowned for being some sort of area packed full of dairies? Is Devon the milking room of Britain? What, you might ask, has all this got to due with the cost of custard? (A phrase my mother sometime employs instead of “So?”). Quite a lot actually I would reply. But first some more background ... more

When it comes to custard, for me it's a no brainer and I always go straight for the 'Amrbosia custard', I eat it plane or on hot puddings, crumbles and pies and I don't mind anyway as long as it is only this make! What is it? It is a tin or custard, it is not the instant stuff wher you have to add water, but is 'pre-made' in a sense and all you have to do is heat it up. The range? Yes, there is a range of Ambrosia dessert custard, you can get it in the tin, the bigger carton, little pots, some with strawberry jam, little crumble pots with custard next to it- the list goes on! The price: It ... more

Firstly, i never buy custard in cartons, not even Ambrosia; many years ago, i purchased a carton of custard and it was basically rotten (sorry, didnt mean to put you off!) as Ambrosia Devon custard really is of a very good quality and taste. It has a buttery creamy taste and a nice texture. It is not too thck and definately not too thin. I have tried some other cheaper brand custards, and whilst most are good, the taste and quality just doesnt match up to Ambrosia. Value custards are definately a no no in my book; they are watery and tasteless and not worth buying even though they are very ... more

Advantages Advantages Recyclable can, delicious custard, easy to use, great with puddings.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None.

Sometimes my cooking skills are a little lacking and custard is one of these areas so I usually just cheat and Ambrosia Devon Custard in a can is the one that I purchase for 77p per 425g can I think it's worth buying as it keeps the man in my life happy when I've slogged away with a homemade pudding and he doesn't want to eat it alone (wise man!). The custard comes in an aluminium can and has a paper label around it which displays the Ambrosia logo and the label also shows the heating instructions, ingredients & nutritional information. This contains milk, is free from artificial colours & ... more
