America's Most Smartest Model is an American reality television show broadcasted by VH1 in America, and has recently been aired in the UK on MTV since 20th January 2008.
These days the prettier someone is, the less intelligent they are expected to be, it is assumed that you can't have both and no one has it worse than models. True or not, we all assume that models are stupid. In fact, we want them to be stupid. We need them to be stupid because life would be too unfair if the beautiful people were also smarter. But is this assumption really true? Do smart models exist, or does getting by on your looks make a person stupid? America's Most Smartest Model is a show to decide just that. 16 models, some having degrees and high qualifications will live together as they compete to determine which of them has what it takes to out smarten and outshine the rest and become "America's Most Smartest Model" - The perfect combination of Beauty and Brains. ~~~~~~~~~ The Hosts ~~~~~~~~~
The show's hosts are Ben Stein and Mary Alice Stephenson. Mary Alice Stephenson is well known in the fashion industry and has been around for 17 years; she is a celebrity stylist, director and fashion consultant and has worked for top magazines such as Marie Clare and Vogue. The hosts do poke fun at the models, and there is some obvious dislike shown, particularly by Mary Alice, who makes sure her opinions are clearly voiced. Mary Alice was so annoyed with one of the contestants Rachel and that she had tried to manipulate and control other contestants that she called her out before the show's actual elimination phase to sternly inform her that she was booted! This made good watching, and I was glad to see Rachel get her comeuppance but was a bit shocked at Mary Alice's behaviour too! I'd never heard of Ben Stein before, but he is been in a huge amount of things, mostly American programs, explaining why I hadn't heard of him. He has been an award winning actor, economist, writer, journalist, and teacher, and is equally well known in Americas board rooms and in Americas dormitories and fraternity houses. He is overshadowed by Mary Alice.
~~~~~~~~~~~ Contestants ~~~~~~~~~~~
Andre Birleanu - Age 24 - Born in Moscow but raised in Romania. The son of diplomats, and speaks 5 languages fluently. Discovered by a modelling agency whilst he was fixing his bike on the side of the road! Before taking part in the show Andre was modelling for Converse. Quite stuck up, but reasonably friendly.
Jesse Lewis - Age 26 - Bisexual and considers Naomi Campbell as his biggest role model. Graduated from University with an Honours in English and Telecommunications. Very friendly and outgoing.
Rachel Myers - Age 27 - My least favourite model. She modelled for Trash Lingerie, is an animal lover and strict vegetarian, she claims she eats junk food all the time and never needs to exercise, although she is by far the skinniest model in the show, not sure I believe her on that one! She just about scrapes through the tasks and she's very tactical and manipulative in her choosing on partners and sulks unbelievably if she doesn't get her own way. Stupidly slagged off the hosts on camera. One of the tasks she had to do involved cutting out shapes - she was even incapable of that!
Mandy Lynn - Age 26 - Models for Playboy, only 5ft 2" in height. Mandy considers herself to be an excellent speller. She is bubbly and fun and friendly to the other contestants. One of my favourites.
Erika Medina - Age 22 - Favourite subject at school was drama. Born in Anaheim and now lives in California. Models for FHM and has appeared in a Backstreet Boys video. Keeps herself quite isolated from the group, seems secretly quite bitchy and sneaky.
VJ Logan - Age 21 - Models to pay his way through college. Brought up in Grass Valley. VJ is competitive and doesn't try and hide this, which I think is respectable that he is honest about it, rather than being sneaky like other contestants.
Slavco Tuskaloski - Age 26 - Born in Macedonia, now living in New York. Personal trainer who compares his body to a Ferrari. Also speaks 5 languages fluently like Andre. Loves himself very much, and I know people think models do anyway, but Slavco is over the top!
Angela Hart - Age 25 - Has a 3.2 Associates Degree but currently works in a bar. Lives in San Francisco. Keeps herself to herself, shy but kind.
Brett Novek - Age 22 - Models for Papi underwear. Has a degree in marketing. Born in Fort Lauderdale. Loves arguing, entertaining to watch. Although he likes a good argument, I wouldn't compare him to Charley from Big Brother in anyway, he does it in a fun way and puts his point across well without bullying anyone.
Jamie Everett - Age 26 - Grew up in Texas. Voted Miss FHM Midwest, has appeared in the film the 40 Year Old Virgin and also has been on Deal or No Deal opening the boxes.
Gaston Willig - Age 23 - Born in Argentina and now living in Beverley Hills. Currently at university studying for a Bachelors Degree. Loves singing and songwriting.
Daniel Schumen - Age 31 - Has a Masters Degree in Psychology and is fluent in Spanish. Models to pay for his ongoing Education. Very competitive like VJ, sees himself as extremely talented and is a bad loser.
Jeff Pickel - Age 25 - Models for Prada and Marlboro and dropped out of college after 3 years when he was diagnosed with ADHD. Very friendly, caring and nice to everyone, gets along with everyone and really genuine.
Lisa Byrnes (a.k.a Cat) Age - 27 - Has modelled for Maxim and was previously a backup dancer for Sir Paul McCartney. Thinks she is very different and superior to everyone else, when really she is just the same!
Victoria Fisher - Age 22 - Graduated from Brighton University with a 3.7. Modelled for Filthy Gorgeous. Lives in Newport Beach and comes from a Mormon Household. Was raised with money and doesn't really know anything else in the world, which makes her very materialistic and spoilt.
Rachael Murphy - Age 25 - Born in Australia. Graduated from University of Canberra. Lived and worked in L.A, Chicago, New York and Miami. Models for DHL and Circuit City. Loves her family and misses them alot while away, kind and caring.
There are quite alot of interesting characters, and the show recruited some conflicting characters. With all 16 beauties living under one roof, temperatures rise and sparks fly - with flirting and sexual tension running riot. Every single one of these contestants are experts at posing, pouting and are plucked to perfection. They genuinely believe that they are truly intellectual. For some this may be true as they hold degrees and high qualifications but for others, mainly Rachel, this belief is woefully misplaced, imagine Jade Goody on Mastermind.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ What happens on the show ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In every episode the 'himbos' and 'bimbos' will face challenges that put both their overall intelligence and their beauty to the test. The models are sometimes tested as individuals or as team. The individual or team that wins the test will be safe and the loosing individual or team will face elimination, there is always an elimination every week.
The first episode of the show was the contestants all taking part in a spelling bee, where the contestant who performed the best would get a clue to the second task on the show. With the added dose of humour with these models that do stupid things, they weren't afraid to poke fun at the models by getting them to spell the simplest of words and making fun of them when they got it wrong! The second task was then to test whether models were capable of doing more than one thing at once - the task was walking down a catwalk whilst talking. In the competition the models will be made to face horrendous forfeits for failing tasks, such as making the really skinny ones eat cake - a bit evil I know! Throughout the rest of the season the contestants were asked quite hard questions and also some fun and simple questions, which always seem to trick people out! One of the questions I saw someone was asked was "what is a nincompoop"?... well I might make myself look stupid here, but didn't even realise that was a real word!
One of my favourite episodes was Daniel's birthday. The models are treated to a night on the tiles to celebrate Daniel's birthday. After stressful weeks of competing against each other they really let their hair down, but they had been tricked, this wasn't really a night off, it was a task! After all getting successfully drunk they discovered that they had to network with LA's top fashion agents and fashionistas. It was hilarious seeing them all panicking and trying to make themselves look less drunk and perfect again, but we all know what happens when you've had one too many, you think you've made yourself look better when infact you look even worse! It was one of those situations where you're so drunk you don't think anyone will realise. Another of my favourite episodes was where the models had a photo shoot in the countryside and they had to model with a certain animal ranging from horses to pigs. Only thing is Brett is has a huge phobia of pigs!
~~~~~~~~~~~~ What is it like? ~~~~~~~~~~~~
I find this show is in-between America's Next Top Model which is aired in the UK on Living and Beauty and the Geek aired on Channel 4. It is searching for a model and the elimination and way the show is set and recorded is very similar to America's Next Top Model and asking 'beauties' questions about Science, Maths etc - the so called hard subjects beautiful people aren't supposed to know anything about.
~~~~~~~~~~ Advertising ~~~~~~~~~~
Adverts for America's Most Smartest Model were shown on MTV along with other Satellite channels, especially Living, which was probably to attract the fans of America's Next Top Model. I didn't really get the advert. "MTV is making beautiful people look stupid...Join the protest...don't watch" and " Against Model Testing". I really didn't understand these adverts, I'm sure they were meant to be funny but why would the encourage people not to watch the show! The only reason I began watching it was the clips on the tasks they showed looked funny and entertaining!
~~~~~~~~~~ Is it for me? ~~~~~~~~~~
America's Most Smartest Model is one of those programs that you either love or hate! If you like programs like America's Next Top Model, Beauty and the Geek, Vanity Lair and other similar reality TV shows, then chances are you'll like this. I don't think it's similar to Big Brother, I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here reality shows, although I do love them too! It is much less reality than that, the participants aren't all cooped up in one space and you aren't always watching to wait to for something to happen. The show always shows the participants doing things, and in the accommodation only shows interesting things for viewing such as a relationship starting, an argument etc. If you really can't stand celebrity shows or any reality shows then you won't like this one either. It's broadcast in the UK at a time when not much else is on (Sunday 9pm) so if you're ever at a loose end it's worth checking out. I think this is also a good show to let anyone see what modelling is about, the advantages and disadvantages.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Will there be a Season 2? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
VH1 has confirmed that there will in fact be an America's Most Smartest Model 2. VH1 is currently casting for season two on their website. No date has been set for it to be aired, and no confirmation has been made to whether MTV will air a second season in the UK.
If you want to watch any of the episodes you can check them out on the following website -

~~~~~~~~~~ Conclusi on ~~~~~~~~~~
I would definitely recommend watching this program, if after reading this review you think it's your type of thing. It's light entertainment, easy to watch and funny! In the UK it is aired on MTV and it is regularly repeated on all different days of the week, so it's hard to miss!
Advantages: Satirical look at the shallow world of today Disadvantages: The contestants take the show too seriously
...of the YOO-NI-IDD states of America's American Model elite. It's a very tongue in cheek and ironic show. For years there has always been the debate about whether or not Models have brains, adding into the debate that goes right back to early literature…Is beauty skin deep? Is intelligence more important than beauty? Can you be clever and beautiful? Can people be 'legally blonde'? If you want a piece of escapism that requires no thought, this show ... ...you can watch and think 'thank god I'm not as stupid as those 'models'…then you might get something out of this, as some of them as clever. If you loathe reality TV then don't even switch onto VH1 for this crazy show. However, if at the end of the day, you just want to sit back, put your feet up and enjoy the shallow rat race of the model industry, looking for clever models to walk off with prize money, with a few mocking laughs along the way…then ...
This show is pretty entertaining once you get past that its an American show which usually I cant seem to stand for some reason and also that there models. It does have a bit of a feel good factor when you know your smarter than most of the models on here, but then again they do look better so its win loose really. If you enjoyed beauty and ... ...competition format. Of the latter, America's Next Top Model is probably the best; VH1's new show America's Most Smartest Model is around medium.
AMSM's premise is simple: you take a dozen models from around the world then send them through mildly rigorous tests of modelling skill and intelligence to see who can last until the end. The show is sort of like Beauty and the Geek except there aren't any geeks, which is unfortunate because geeks make ...
Reality TV shows still seem to be the flavour of the year with TV producers and, it seems, fashion and modelling shows are the current "must have" for any discerning TV channel. We have UK shows in programmes such as "Colleen's Real Women" and shows who's format crosses the water such as "America's/Britain's Next Top Model". Then, just when you thought things couldn't get any more contrived, TV executives decide to add "spin" and we get shows such ... ...UK (VH1 screened in the US) of early this year "America's Most Smartest Model".
Now, I'm hoping that the programme writers intended the irony in the title (a double superlative is, quite simply, wrong) and that the name of the show was, truly, intended to be a reflection of the spoof-ish nature of this show. The female host admits as much at the start of the programme but then adds that the stakes are real. $100,000 in prize money should be enough ...
...rather have, beauty or brains? America's Most Smartest Model is of course another export from across the pond to make up a part of MTV's el mainstage sunday programming, joining Tila Tequila on the lineup. For an MTV show, quite a large advertising campaign was put into motion, which saw commercials for the show appear on other satellite television channels - the only thing was I didn't exactly get the commercials. I don't think a good advertising ... ...SCREW IN A LIGHTBULB
America's Most Smartest Model, has actually given me hope for all the other modeling shows on television, because the tasks actually are split into two parts to test both the models intelligence and modeling smarts, with the contestant(s) faring the worst getting the chop at the hands of presenters Ben Stein and Mary-Alice Stephenson. I think these shows keep your interest by having interesting characters as contestants, and ...
Advantages: A bit of a giggle Disadvantages: You feel cruel for laughing at them
When I first saw the advertising on VH1 for a series called Americas Most Smartest model I couldn't contain a cruel chuckle, slightly bored with the run of Americas Top model style shows, glamorizing the profession and making those of us out there who don't fall into the category of "the beautiful few" feel unworthy, Americas Most Smartest Model seemed to be looking at the world of modeling in a very different light, examining whether these individuals ... ...or whether they could actually be truly intelligent human beings that were blessed with good looks to boot, admittedly I doubted the latter and expected a healthy dose of laughing at the models expense as they subjected themselves to tests of their intelligence and fell flat. In a mix of reality contest styles each episode saw the contestants face challenges that would test their intelligence as well as their beauty, the model or team that won the ...
