Civil War defined what has since become known as the "Ken Burns approach"--voice-over narrators reading letters and documents dramatically and stating the writer's name at their conclusion, fresh live footage of places juxtaposed with still images (photographs, paintings, maps, prints), anecdotal interviews, and romantic musical scores taken from the era he depicts. The American Civil War uses all of these devices to evoke atmosphere and resurrect an event that many knew only from stale history books. While Burns is a historian, a researcher, and a documentarian, he's above all a gifted storyteller, and it's his narrative powers that give this chronicle its beauty, overwhelming emotion, and devastating horror. Using the words of old letters, eloquently read by a variety of celebrities, the stories of historians like Shelby Foote and rare, stained photos, Burns allows us not only to learn and understand history, but also to feel and experience it. --Dave McCoy

Advantages: Good for wargamers, quite realitic scenarios Disadvantages: Too slow for action seekers
...I purchase Battlegroung Shiloh as a set of three similar games as a bargain pack from PC world. It is one of a series of similar product mainly covering AmericanCivil Waer and Napoleonic scenarios. Its a typical war gaming strategy type game based on a two day battle in the AmericanCivilWar. You can re-enact either the complete battle or selected parts of it. You can take the part of Confederates under Johnston or the Unionists under Grant. Each game scenario is reenacted over a predefined number of game moves representing the duration of the actual battle (or battle phase). During this time you must try to outwit your oponent and try to re-write (or conform to ) history. The game allows you to experiment with variations on the historic reality by changing the location, time and nature of your attacks. Being a turn based game in which...

Advantages: Verry adictive Disadvantages: Can cause lack of sleep when played into the small hours.
...Civilization is a fabulous game. It is a superb example of what a strategy game should be. It is very addictive and it is beautifully complex without being too hard for a firs timer to get into. Build your civilization, keep your people happy, fight wars and make it to space. This game is a natural progression from the first game and it adds small features without completely changing the game. The hardest thing to get used to is the new map view: it is isometrical and not in normal squares....

Advantages: Interesting, Educational and Brilliant... Disadvantages: Requires a week to play a single game.
...has two attributes, which can for example be Religious, Scientific or Militaristic. These attributes provide a bonus on those types, and your empire will tend in those directions, optionally a civilization specific military unit is provided such as French musketeers or the Roman centurions.
Civilization 3 sports a hefty (for today’s game standards) 235 page manual, which I referred to from time to time to understand the capabilities of certain units and mechanics. The game also comes with a built in editor, which lets you design the game elements and maps to play on. Of course, sound isn't that important in a game like this. There is good background music that fits with the theme: warlike if you're at war, "ancient" in ancient times, modern once your civilization fancies such marvels as computers, etc.
Installation was very easy...

Way back in the mists of time… well 1991 a long time in PC game terms, there was a game called Civilization. This was the new offering from Sid Meyer who had had great success with a previous strategy game called 'Railroad Tycoon'. Civilisation was one... more
