"A creepy and scary horror story"

A TV series which I came across by accident on Netflix, is American Horror Story, which is a FX television series. Season 1 of the series is titled Murder House and focuses on a family who move into a haunted house with dark secrets.

American Horror Story: Murder House is about the Harmon family, Ben, Vivien and their daughter Violet, who have moved from Boston to Los Angeles after Vivien has a miscarriage and Ben has an affair with a student. They move into a restored mansion, unaware of the dark secrets of the house. The house is haunted by its former inhabitants who died on the property over the years. The neighbours Constance and her daughter Addie soon become frequent, and sometimes unwelcome guests who are hiding their own secrets. When Ben starts treating psychiatrist patients in his home office, he meets a troubled and possibly psychotic teenage boy named Tate Langdon, who turns out to be Constance’s son, who has his own dark secrets. It soon becomes apparent that the house has a supernatural presence which has affected every tenant throughout the years. The Harmon family decide to sell the house and cut their losses, but that may prove more difficult than they first thought as events get out of control.

This is an enjoyable and very creepy TV series at a haunted house and the strange people associated with it. It is a very dark and at times disturbing series which will really appeal to fans of the horror genre. The stories each week delve deeper into the history of the house, exposing the dark and creepy secrets over the years. There are plenty of scares and also graphic scenes, which are not for the faint hearted. The title sequence was enough to give my wife scares. The series has a stylish look to it and has a quality cast of famous and not so famous actors who all perform at the top of their game. Many of the characters have their own malevolent agendas, leaving you guessing as to the fate of the Harmon family, as their lives begin to fall apart. The creepy music and locations add to the scares and dark mood of the series. It is an intriguing look at the dark nature of life as a seemingly innocent family move in to house of horrors.

I thought that Dylan McDermott did well as Dr. Ben Harmon, who soon discovers that the house his family has bought hides very dark and deadly secrets. McDermott delivers a good performance as a man living on the edge as his world collapses around him. Connie Britton is good as Ben’s wife, Vivien, who has her world turned upside down when she moves into what was supposed to be her dream house. Britton delivers a decent performance as Vivien. Evan Peters stands out as the mysterious Tate Langdon, a patient of Ben’s who is hiding his own dark secrets. Film star Jessica Lange is brilliant as Constance Langdon, a neighbour of the Harmon’s, who has a long history with the house. The film also stars Taissa Farmiga, Denis O'Hare, Frances Conroy, Kate Mara and Zachary Quinto.

The series creators Brad Falchuk and Ryan Murphy have managed to make a quality series which is genuinely creepy and scary. The brilliant cast also help this series stand out from the crowd and make for a very watchable TV series.
