Well what would i do without it! This box is a must gadget that every home needs, and theres no subscription to use the recording facilities aslong as you have a subscription to Sky. I bought this box off eBay for a bargain price of £65 including P&P and it has proved itself to be worth every penny.

Before you go any further into my review please read this:

This was my first Sky+ box and after owning it for a week it has now GONE! The reason for this is that i have it in my bedroom and the noise it made when it was on drove me mad, a really high pitch noise. So it has gone now im afraid to say :(. So i replaced it with a Pace and WOW what a difference, the Pace is almost silent when in operation, and is fast at navigating through the menu's. So that now i have had chance to compare the Amstrad i dont think its that good afterall. it works just as it should, looks nice, does what it says on the tin but is slow at navigating through menu's and is soo NOISY! Would be OK in a large living room and in a cabinet :). So be warned!!!

Now about the box as that is probably the reason you are reading this! Well the box arrived 2 days after i ordered it and it came all packaged up like new as it is 3 months old. I had a standard sky box before this one and all i did was disconnect all of the wires from that box and simply plug them all into the new box, simple enough. It was then just the case of putting in the viewing card and switching it on at the wall. So i switched it on and whas met by a low whirring noise as it started up, and after about 30 seconds it was on and i was watching the tv straight away with no problems, all the mixes i have were all waiting. So it only took from opening the box 10 minutes before i was sat watching the TV again :D!

The box is so much better lookin than the older Sky+ boxes, with the recording buttons on the to the left of the front of the machine. I like the green circle that spins round when you pause and rewind etc. It has all of the buttons you need to operate the whole machine all on the front even without the remote. So for looks its great, but could do with a little updating as the design hasnt changed much since its first release back in 2001. The remote on the other hand is great, unlike most remotes it isnt cheap in the respect that it has a good weight to it when held. It has all of the functions to work every function there is to offer all from the tip of your fingers. One thing i would say that there is a very slight difference in the speed inwich the box responds to the remote which is the same with all Sky+ boxes and even on my HD box, the standard ones are very fast but obviously dont record.

Now the only flaw i could find with the box is that when i first got it it made a whirring noise 24/7 which with it being in my bedroom drove me insane. But a quick forced software update sorted that out straight away and when in standby it is completly silent. Apart from that there have been no problems with the box and i am over the moon with its ease of use!

My problems were not with the box but with SKY, they are useless no doubt about it. Half an hour on the phone to get the recording activated! And i had to make 3 or 4 phone calls totalling £7 each, so i would reccomend that to get your Sky+ activated you just email them with your card details and box details which can all be found under the services menu. Send them an email telling them what you want and include this info and they will do it for you with no need for any phone calls. But beware you have to have the box connected to the phone line for 12 months. And do remember that Sky+ requires 2 leads from the dish for the full use of recording. I had a local engineer fit one of thos octo LNB\'s and run an extra cable which cost £30, cheaper than Sky at £65!

Overall i would definetly reccomend Sky+ to anybody. So what are you waiting for? Get one, fit it, love it! Just dont get an Amstrad if you dont want a noisy box, or a Thomson, Pace are rare but are the best. My first box i got when Sky first began broadcasting was a Pace and was excellent. You cant beat a Pace!

If you would like any extra info just drop me an email and i will be happy to help! And thanks for reading.

It was me who submitted this box to Ciao so i could let everyone know how good it is.

Advantages: large in built memory,2 channel feature, easy to use
Disadvantages: can freeze, slow to turn on

In a previous job i used to work for sky and upsell people this sky+ box and ts only been 6 weeks ago eventually when i got myself SKY+..the recording feature of this box has changd the way i watch television..the first thing that impressed me was the large memory inbuilt and the 2 channels is awesome...as time went on i realised that when i got up in the morning and turned on the box,by the time i made breakfast and a cuppa it still wasn`t on. Another ...
...and slows down especially when recording and watching another programme at the same time. Overall great piece of technology..very easy to use and understand..changes completely what you watch..e.g.i no longer come in from work and have to sit and watch 3 hours of soaps as now the misses can record it and watch it the next day when i am at work..just for that fact ...this sky+box is gold dust..and i would advise everyone to get the pgrade and .....as ... Quick review of Amstrad DRX280 Sky Box
Review of Amstrad by TechiePete

Good PVR - worked straight out of the box. Simple set-up menu system. Sligtly noisy (fan) and a bit slow on channel selection otherwise it works well and enables you to easily download your recordings to DVD at a later date if required.

Amstrad Sky+ Box
Review of Amstrad by stefkob

Advantages: good quality
Disadvantages: expensive

I think Sky+ is an excellent addition to my overall package i had multiroom added as well and the reduction in arguments is worth the extra monthly amount. I have been able to watch programmes that i would have missed because someone else had the control or i had something else planned. After the initial bad start we agreed a time and date the engineer was a little late but did call to apologise. Everything went smoothly with sky plus but the multiroom ...
...I ordered Sky + Last week , I was promised and sent a letter saying it would be installed on the 11th, which I thought was a great turn around time. The engineer called me to inform me that he would be with me between 3 and 6pm, I waited until 7:30pm and still he had not arrived, I called Sky only to be told that the installation had been completed on their system... Strange that is... Since I had been waiting and no engineer arrived. The customer ... Read review

DRX280 - A backward step?
Review of Amstrad by sjbrain

Advantages: Does what it says on the tin - a hard disk drive Sky decoder
Disadvantages: slower channel change than my 6 year old basic Pace sky box

...par for the course from Amstrad it seems. I think the picture quality may be marginally better, though contrast is higher so I need to fiddle with the settings on my TV. I was expecting a big step up after 6 years of technology progress and a supposedly higher end offering. I didn't get one. ... Read review

Amstrad's Satellite Box for BSKYB
Review of Amstrad DRX 550 by  AndyGray2k7

Advantages: Good Picture and sound - See review!
Disadvantages: Remote control

...::::INTRODUCTION:::: Sky gave me this box when i signed up to sky multi-room. The box cost £49 with installation, but its free if your a first time subscriber and not getting multi-room! ::::CONNECTIONS:::: There are plenty of connections on this box by Amstrad... You can connect it up to surround sound, share the aerial feed and connect to a vcr or dvd recorder (standard stuff really). There slots to put your sky viewing card and interactive card (like a sky credit card) are stored away under a cover, which adds a nice style to the box. ::::Sound & Picture Quality:::: The sound and picture quality is just like my other sky (grundig) box, but sound and picture are slightly better as the Amstrad box has all the improved data chips and DVB certified stuff etc. The picture is nice on a SD Television, the detail is vibrant... Amstrad was not for us
Review of BSkyB - Digital by  Shell

Advantages: channels for everyone
Disadvantages: Amstrad boxes

...We decided to upgrade to sky digital when the offer became available for £40 installation cost. That seems to have been our first mistake as we ended up with a dreaded Amstrad box! We had previously had analogue equipment and had subscribed to Sky for 5 years without any problems with either our equipment or Sky. Our luck then seemed to have run out. We took up the £40 offer with Sky themselves and they organised the delivery and installation of the new dish and box and we paid the fitter. Great we thought! We had the family package which cost £11.99 at the time and we recieved all of the channels which interested us such as: UK Gold - Old dramas and soaps Granada Plus - Old dramas and soaps Living - Talk Shows UK Style - Home and Garden programmes as well as all of the primary, discovery and music channels. Will You Just Hurry Up !!!
Review of Amstrad DRX300 by  bazzaoleary77

Advantages: Look's Nice
Disadvantages: Slow pick up.

...locally who accepted just £20 for a Amstrad DRX300 digital receiver box and she even dropped it around to me within the hour. I ditched the old Sky box as it looked beyond repair and set up the Amstrad box I had just bought this is where I encountered my first problem not the fault of the box I must say. I had to update the box with my details through Sky and this alone took me 20 minute's on the telephone but once it was sorted I was able to get viewing again. However when I turned on the Amstrad box it took a full 5-10 minutes to load up and you just find yourself looking at a blank screen for age's. This I found out was because of the inferior part's used in the amstrad box. Once the Amstrad had loaded I noticed the next problem when using the remote control there is a 4-5 second delay so when choosing channels by the time you reach... Read review
