Manufacturer's product description
In "An Imperfect Offering", he tells his own extraordinary story of being a doctor, but also discusses the nature of humanitarian action today and our responsibilities as citizens of the world. Born in Britain in 1960, James Orbinski's family moved to Canada when he was seven years old. As a young man, he became a medic to learn how to help, and deal with, the suffering of others. From then on he was plunged into many highly demanding situations, including being Head of Mission for Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) during the Rwandan genocide; engaging with the politics of humanitarian work as the President of MSF; being in New York when the towers fell on 9/11; co-founding Dignitas International (an AIDS charity); and, finally, returning to Rwanda on the 10th anniversary of the crisis there. In "An Imperfect Offering", Orbinski not only tells his own inspiring story but is also remarkably provocative about what governments and agencies should and shouldn't be doing to help the world's poor and very sick. At the same time, he addresses what part each of us can play, so that we never lose sight of the dignity of those being helped, or deny them the right to act in their own lives. His conclusion is blunt and profound: 'Humanity is lost or saved one person at a time, one intention at a time, and one action at a time. There are no utopias waiting to be born. There is only what we do - what you choose to do...'
Advantages: A well researched historical story Disadvantages: A break from Pattersons usual genre
...century France that James Patterson describes seems both plausible and pleasant. James Patterson has always had a habit in his books of writing very short chapters, usually about four pages long, and I have to say I enjoy the style immensely. I can read just one more chapter before bed and it does not take another twenty minutes, it also moves the action on at a pace and sets up multiple end of chapter cliff hangers.
It has to be the full five stars from me, James Patterson was brave to attempt this style of book so removed from his usual and highly successful subject matter. I actually hope he writes more in this style as he pulls it off with aplomb.

...Well . . . it's different! And it's a lot of fun.
We are "at the dawn of the twenty-firstcentury" in North Dublin, where we meet Master Artemis Fowl. He is descended from a long line of legendary lawbreakers and is a criminal mastermind himself. He is a kidnapper, a conniver, a computer genius . . . he loves his mother, oh and he's only 12-years-old.
His father is missing, his mother is temporarily out of her mind with grief. That leaves Artemis out of school and free to skedaddle about the globe with his trusty manservant, Butler, on a spree to refill the family coffers with fairy gold, thereby restoring the Fowl family fortune to its billionaire status, a status that was plunged into jeopardy by his father's bad investments and involvement with the Russian Mafia just before his ship was blown to bits along with Butler's uncle...

A developing spirit... Review ofThe Spirit of Anglicanism: Hooker, Maurice, Temple - William J. Wolfby
frkurt
Advantages: A good introduction and encapsulation of these three theologians. Disadvantages: Ignores some important points
..., with definitions of these three varying a great deal. The authority of Scripture is important, but this does not mean a literalist view. The authority of tradition, best summed up by adherence to the Book of Common Prayer’s liturgical forms, is locally adaptable. Reason is used to interpret both the authority of Scripture and of tradition, but must be held in restraint by these as well. 'The spirit of Anglicanism ought in its rich resources to find the wisdom to retain its identity and yet to develop through constructive change to meet the demands of the fast-approaching world of the twenty-firstcentury.' (p. 187)
The development of Anglicanism as a bridge between catholic and protestant worlds cannot be overstated, although Anglicans often do not understand their role in this themselves, much less to be able to articulate it with clarity to others...
