Advantages: A humorously irreverent look at British history. Disadvantages: None for me. Too English for some?
, with an idea if how life was for the rest.
I found it an entertaining way of improving my understanding of the way Britain has evolved from the Stone Age to the early 21st century, in other words from Neanderthal to Blair.
There is a colour illustrated hardback edition or a paperback version. The Amazon website currently has a Look Inside feature, which shows the full list of contents, introductory chapter and index.
The paperback has served me well, but you may prefer the hardback especially while it is on special offer at Amazon. Their website has a Look Inside feature for this book.
For me, this is a book to buy, rather than just to borrow.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for those wishing to improve on a very basic knowledge of Britishhistory.

History, Marr tells us, is ?either a moral argument with lessons for the here-and-now or it is merely an accumulation of pointless facts?. One can hardly argue with that assessment. This book is overflowing with facts, yet all knitted together to perfection.
I can see this book as not just being a read for today, but one which will be enjoyed, consulted and used as an academic reference tool for years to come. One can read it from cover to cover, or alternatively dip into it and savour short chapters on why the Goons were so revolutionary in British post-war humour, Cecil King and the threatened putsch against Harold Wilson's government in 1968, or the ERM debacle of 1992, and much much more.

Advantages: Concise, fully-indexed, history of Britain. Disadvantages: Not as enjoyable or inclusive as British History for Dummies.
