From Neanderthal to Blair - A British History

Advantages: A humorously irreverent look at British history.
Disadvantages: None for me. Too English for some?

, with an idea if how life was for the rest. I found it an entertaining way of improving my understanding of the way Britain has evolved from the Stone Age to the early 21st century, in other words from Neanderthal to Blair. There is a colour illustrated hardback edition or a paperback version. The Amazon website currently has a Look Inside feature, which shows the full list of contents, introductory chapter and index. The paperback has served me well, but you may prefer the hardback especially while it is on special offer at Amazon. Their website has a Look Inside feature for this book. For me, this is a book to buy, rather than just to borrow. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for those wishing to improve on a very basic knowledge of British history. Paperback: 444 pages Publisher: John Wiley & Sons; 2nd Edition (10 Nov 2006) ISBN ...

Review of British History for Dummies - Sean Lang

Telling the history of the nation with enjoyment

Advantages: Well-told history
Disadvantages: None

? History, Marr tells us, is ?either a moral argument with lessons for the here-and-now or it is merely an accumulation of pointless facts?. One can hardly argue with that assessment. This book is overflowing with facts, yet all knitted together to perfection. I can see this book as not just being a read for today, but one which will be enjoyed, consulted and used as an academic reference tool for years to come. One can read it from cover to cover, or alternatively dip into it and savour short chapters on why the Goons were so revolutionary in British post-war humour, Cecil King and the threatened putsch against Harold Wilson's government in 1968, or the ERM debacle of 1992, and much much more. (This is a modified version of the review I originally posted on Bookbag) ...

Review of A History of Modern Britain - Andrew Marr

Bite Into British History

Advantages: Concise, fully-indexed, history of Britain.
Disadvantages: Not as enjoyable or inclusive as British History for Dummies.

The Author Judy Parkinson seems to be on a crusade to help us learn and remember academic facts. In August 2007 it was through the release of her book "i before e". Then in October 2008 her book Remember, Remember (The Fifth of November) was published. Her newest effort Spilling the Beans on the Cat's Pyjamas: Popular Expressions - What They Mean and How We Got Them is due in the shops in September 2009. Contents In Remember, Remember, the author has broken down British history into A5 sized, one page chunks, with a new heading for each. The individual pages are bought together into the following chapters: Roman Britain, The Dark Ages, The Late Middle Ages, Tudor Britain, Stuart Britain, Georgian Britain, Victorian Britain, Edwardian Britain, The First World War Years, The Inter-War Years ...
