~ ~ We all suffer from various and multifarious minor illnesses and ailments throughout our lifetime, and if you’re anything like the ‘mad cabbie’ then you can’t be bothered rushing around to the doctor’s surgery every time you get a minor ache or pain. Apart from the inconvenience, we don’t have a National Health Service here in the Republic of Ireland, and pay for our visits to the doctor (those who can afford it) at the rate of between €30 and €50, and then for any prescriptions that we receive. (at the market rate for the drug) So the doctor’s surgeries here in Ireland don’t tend to be inundated with people suffering from ailments like headaches, toothaches, minor colds and flu, and general aches and pains.
~ ~ That’s not to say that people don’t still suffer from them, but they DO tend to use their local pharmacies to obtain an over the counter medicine to alleviate their symptoms rather than running to the doctor. Personally, I find that the two best medicines for most aches and pains are the old reliables, aspirin and paracetamol. Before the multi-national drug companies copped on to the huge profits to be gleaned, you used to be able to buy both these drugs in a generic form, called simply Aspirin B.P. and Paracetamol B.P., and for pennies at that! Nowadays, you can’t seem to get the basic form of the drugs anywhere, and are therefore forced into buying the branded products, such as Bayer Aspirin, and the one I am going to talk about here, Anadin Extra. I still buy the Bayer Aspirin, as I take one every morning to help my circulation, and to help relieve minor arthritis that I have in my fingers and wrists. (due to too much golf over the years, I think!) If you’re sufficiently interested, I have a lengthy opinion buried somewhere in my profile that outlines in detail the history and therapeutic qualities of the ‘wonder drug.’ But for everyday colds and flu, and for minor aches and pains, we use Anadin Extra, as it contains both aspirin and paracetamol. There’s slightly more aspirin (300mg) than paracetamol, (200mg) and for some reason there is also a small amount of caffeine thrown in for good measure. (Not that I need any extra doses of caffeine, being a confirmed coffee addict) We use Anadin Extra for the very simple reason that they work very effectively, and will relieve most of the worst symptoms of a cold or flu, or an ache, pain or toothache, within about 15 to 30 minutes. I’m told that they are also very effective in relieving the throbbing headache that you get with a hangover, but thankfully I haven’t suffered from one of those for a long time now! And they’re easy to swallow, even without a glass of water.
~ ~ The suggested dose is a couple of tablets every four hours or so, and they’re not considered suitable for pregnant women, anyone who suffers with a stomach ulcer, asthmatics, anyone with a kidney or liver complaint, or children under the age of twelve. Made by Whitehall Laboratories, you can buy them in packs 8, 16, and 32 tablets, and they are not too expensive at in or around the €1.35 to €1.65 mark for a pack of sixteen. (depending on where you buy them) They can be found most everywhere these days, from your local pharmacy, to the supermarket or garage forecourt. I believe that they used to make a pack of 64 tablets, but this has now been discontinued, as if you overdose on paracetamol then it can lead to a very nasty death. (liver failure) This price is still a lot more expensive than the old Aspirin or Paracetamol B.P. that you used to be able to purchase, but given the effectiveness of the tablets, they couldn’t really be considered that expensive. (even by a penny pinching Scotsman!)

I’m sure that like me, most of you will have tried an endless number of different brands of pain killer over the years, with varying degrees of success, but I have never found any brand of pain killer as effective as these. As far as value for money, convenience and effective are concerned I have absolutely no criticisms of this product.

Mine happens to be Asda's.(sorry for those of you who have already read lots of my Asda selling ops!!Expect lots more over the course of time!)

Over the years I’ve tried loads of different pain killers, but none have come close to Anadin Extra in terms of effectiveness and speed.
Anadin Extra are a more powerful version of the traditional Anadin, made by Whitehall Laboratories (who also make many other big names in medicine, including Advil, Bisodol, Centrum and the butt of many jokes, Preparation H).

Advantages: Pain relief, convenience, ease of use, portability, minimal side effects Disadvantages: Price, relief is partial and temporary
I have migraines fairly frequently - "walking" migraines, not usually the devastating events that some people suffer, touch wood.
When I get them I have to take AnadinExtra; anything else just goes through me without even touching the sides. With AnadinExtra I can get almost one pain-free hour in every four hours between doses.
However I find that keeping a 4head stick with me at all times, and using it frequently in addition to the painkillers, provides a lot of relief by cooling down my forehead, in the same way that holding an ice-bag to my forehead would help. Of course you can only hold an ice-bag to your skin for 10 minutes before you start to get tissue damage, which is not something I risk with the 4head stick (other than the risk of contact dermatitis or sensitization, and of course if you're allergic to any ...

For this brand of paracetamol it is quite expensive in deeded!! Costing £1.75 for just 16 tablets!! Which considering you buy a standard supermarkets own paracetamol it costs approx 25 pence for 16 tablets! This price puts me off simply because they are all the same drug Paracetamol 500mg just with a 1 pound 50p difference!!
*Other Anadin products include, AnadinExtra, Anadin original, Anadin ibuprofen and Anadin ultra ibuprofen

Advantages: Effective and fast-acting Disadvantages: Some people may suffer side effects
When it comes to pain, I have always been a bit of a wimp. This is especially true of headache pain, although fortunately, I do not suffer with too many of those. Whenever I do, however, I am often forced to reach for the painkillers. Over the years, I have tried many different brands of painkillers and whilst they have all been quite effective in combating headache pain, there has been one particular brand to which I have remained faithful: Anadin Paracetamol.
There are several types of Anadin available, ranging from the standard Anadin Regular to the more expensive varieties, AnadinExtra and Anadin Ultra. The box I have in front of me is Anadin Paracetamol (Regular), which contains 16 individual tablets. My review will therefore focus on this particular variety.
