Fantastic pain relief for sore gums for all ages, that's how I'd sum up Liquid Anbesol. I remember using this when I was little so it must have been when my second lot of teeth were coming through. I remember it always got rid of the pain but never considered using it for my baby as I thought it was too severe for little ones.

So fast forward 25 years (ish) and it was time for me to have my first child. If you're like me, you will read a lot around different topics on babies but will always appreciate someone's own experience more from knowing that they've been there and got the t-shirt. I was told that you can't go wrong with Calgel for teething, it's far better than Bongela.

Wanting to save a few pennies, we first ignored this advice and bought Boot's own teething gel. The day had arrived and our son was seriously not happy and had other symptoms of teething such as red cheeks and, as we call it in our household, a runny bum! This was useless and we had to relent to using some liquid paracetamol (Calpol). We then went out and splashed out on Calgel which currently costs £2.19 for a small tube. It did work for a while with the niggly first type of teething (our son's teeth at first came very slowly). After a while, a friend told me that she had been told Calgel wasn't as good as Bongela and so we bought Bongela at £2.79 a tube. It really wasn't making much difference and so we ended up getting the liquid paractamol out again. Then I started reading up on Ciao over six months ago and found that someone had used Liquid Anbesol on a baby. Surely not!!! I went to my local Boots store and questioned the pharmacist, she confirmed that it's perfectly fine for babies. We've been using this since and have managed to avoid having to use other medication many times. My poor son is currently about to have his 4 eye teeth and another front tooth pop through and Anbesol is a real life saver in our household! Once it's applied, he settles immediately.

*** THE PRODUCT ***
Liquid Anbesol contains both antiseptic and anaesthetic. As well as for teething problems, it's also effective for mouth ulcers. It comes in a small, predominately white and green box and contains a small bottle with 6.5 ml of 'wee coloured' liquid. This seems not a lot when the current RRP is £2.75 but it lasts far longer than the 10ml tubes of gels out there, in fact I would go as far to say that one bottle is equivalent to at least 3 tubes.

The active ingredients are:
Lidocaine Hydrochloride
Chlorocresol
Cetylpyridinium Chloride

It also contains:
Alcohol, menthol, glycerin, water and colourants: E104, E110, E123, E142

I think you can guess right now with the active ingredients that it deadens the effective area instantly and does last some time.

*** THE TASTE ***
You can certainly tell there is menthol in there, it is a rather 'herbal' taste but not unpleasant at all nor bitter in taste and my 19 month old will open his mouth for me to apply the liquid so he quite likes it too!

*** DIRECTIONS FOR USE ***
For babies, it suggests you use a clean finger and dab the liquid onto your finger before spreading it onto the babies affected area. You are only to use one application no more than every 30 minutes with a maximum of 8 applications a day.

For children, adults and the elderly, apply via a clean finger but you can put two applications on. You can again only have 8 applications a day.

*** WHERE TO BUY IT ***
You will find it in pharmacies and tend to have to request it from behind the counter.
