Ancient and Medieval Book Club

Going by the dates of the other reviews, I'm wondering if the A&M History Book Club is still going. Dinosaur facing extinction

Advantages: not many
Disadvantages: small discounts/rip off postal charges/unhelpful staff

Going by the dates of the other reviews, I'm wondering if the A&M History Book Club is still going. I joined in 1994 when I was living in an area (London SE18) without a good book shop & found the book club pretty good for the first few years. But after abt 2002 it started going downhill rapidly. The selection of books declined - instead of proper history books the list was padded out with trashy historical romances. The discounts got smaller, & ...
...the p&p charges.
Eventually I couldn't take it any longer when a small book was sent in a massive cardboard box, incurring a ridiculous p&p charge. I found the book club very unhelpful over this & the matter was never resolved, but I never bought anything after that.
I really can't see why anyone would want to use a "service" like this nowadays - there are much better prices (& information) available on sites like Amazon, ... more

A good book club

Advantages: Good joining offers and continued low pricing
Disadvantages: Perhaps somewhat limited range

...have been a member of Ancient and Medieval History book club for well over a year now, and a member of their sister club 'Medieval History' for even longer! The outstanding benefits to both clubs is obviously their joining offers. When I joined I had the choice of purchasing 3 books(or 4, I cant remember exactly!) for a very low price and an extra book free!! With Ancient History club they did not have the free book that I requested so they sent ...
...I had no complaints with that! I have read criticism that the range is limited. Perhaps that is the drawback to joining a specialist club? I personally have not found it at all difficult to fulfil my obligations in purchasing the required number of books; I believe I did this almost immediately! I personally find the categories that they cover fairly wide, taking into account the genre and period that the club covers. Initially, I thought that the ...

Great to join but get out when you can

Advantages: joining offer
Disadvantages: limited range

...very smug when i joined Ancient and Medieval book Club as i made the absolute most of the joining offer. I read loads anyway and the prospect of receiving 6 books for a very small amount of cash was too enticing. So i sent off the form safe in the knowledge i would receive a stash of books and only have to buy 4 books a year. This in itself is massively appealing - 4 books a year is that all? I am a serial reader and have no hesitation walking into ...
...the equivalent of supermarket sweep in Waterstones. Indeed I presently have the grand total of 18 books to read and have just ordered another 6. But i digress, whilst ordering my introductory offer I deliberately went for the books I would have hesitation in routinely buying - Times History of the World, Reference Atlas of the World, The Cambridge Biographical Encyclopaedia etc. This added up to a phenominal amount of cash and i paid about £6 for ...

Why are we waiting?

Advantages: Super joining offer, and members offers. Some really beautiful books to be had..
Disadvantages: Commitment, "Editors choice"

This club offers books at a fairly cheap price, and covers many periods in world history. All they ask is that you buy at least 4 books a year from them. They are available to order by mail , telephone and online . I joined the club in sept 2004, like a lot of people i responded to a flyer that came with a load of junk mail, well who wouldnt, i got 4 great books for only £1. When my introductory books arrived i was dissapointed to read that one ...
..., but was assured i wouldnt have to pay for anything till all my books had arrived. Weeks went by and still no book, yet the club was sending me a red bill, telling me a £3 late payment fee would be levied, i rang customer service, who apologised and reassured me that i didnt have to pay till i had received all my order, and that they were going to reorder the elusive book. A whole 7 months later it still had not arrived, and time was running out ...

history uncovered

Advantages: the advantages to this club are enormous
Disadvantages: not enough subjects covered

this book club i must say is quite brilliant if you are after certain subjects. i joined to buy my husband books on egypt and for once there was actually a varied amount and not quite the same as book shops there not basic but gives you everything through the dynasties. then there are the books on castles, druids, ancient greece , different battles from the as far back as 685. the only draw back at the moment is that not all books are inevery issue ...

THE WORST BOOK CLUB IN THE WORLD EVER

Advantages: NONE - THEY DONT EVEN HONOUR THEIR INTRODUTORY OFFERS
Disadvantages: EVERYTHING

get through “There is a twenty minute wait on the phone line”. I have had problems with books being charged to my account that were neither requested or received. Just Good Books (ie all BCA companies) have ignored every communication I’ve sent via email or normal mail. The latest problem is that they are charging my credit card on a weekly basis for the same items. The Credit Card Company say that they have to give BCA 30 days to reply to disputed items, so it looks like the only way I can stop this is to cancel my credit card. This is just a warning to avoid any book club that has anything to do with BCA. The customer service is the worst I have ever encountered. The ones that I know of are Taste Home Software World QPD Just Good Books TSP Ancient and Medieval Histor Book Club And there are many more ...

Review of Just Good Books

Chasing memories on the Atlantic shores

Advantages: a easy paced and informative read
Disadvantages: none

and America. Hopefully it completes one small page of mans history and as such will hopefully be seen as an import work for that reason. But apart from its value to posterity, Farley Mowat's search of a lost tribe is a wonderful read that will appeal to anyone interested in the cultural movements, lost races and especially anyone who is in love with the wild and wind ravaged seaboards of the north Atlantic. The Alban Quest is published by Weidenfeld and Nicolson but I managed to purchase my copy through "The Ancient and Medieval History Book Club" for around £12. Amazon and e-buy and similar sites will probably have paperback copies for a few pounds and I have even seen a copy up for grabs on readitswapit.com. ...

Review of The Alban Quest - Farley Mowat

The world is not as you thought it was

Advantages: an important theory regarding mans early history
Disadvantages: quite a technical in its presentation

to be true. It is a technical sort of book with a certain amount of elementary maths, which needs to be taken on board to fully understand their theory. The reason that it works is because unlike some of the larger wide ranging approaches to the subject that have gone before, this takes a very specific element of the past and shows how it is suggestive of a larger argument and instead of trying to be all things to all people, it is very focused on its corridor of interest. On top of my recommendation with none other than Colin Wilson proclaiming it as "one of the biggest breakthroughs of all time" this may well prove to be a massively important book in its field. The book is published by Watkins (1-84293-095-8) at £16.99 but I purchased mine from The Ancient and Medieval History Book Club for around £12.00 and I'm sure in second had ...
