Andrews Salts is an old fashioned ‘digestive discomfort’ remedy I always have in the house. It comes in a small blue and white tin and is full of fine white powder that would probably get you arrested if you were to bag it up and take it through customs. There are up to 20 doses in this 113g tin. UPDATE: 11/03/01 - I've just seen the new packaging in Boots. It is now in a neat plastic oval shaped jar (still blue and white), with a free measuring spoon.
Andrews Salts claims to ‘refresh and revitalise your digestive system quickly and effectively relieves upset stomach, indigestion, and symptoms of over indulgence.’ There is also another claim, which we will come to later and that I can confirm is highly effective. So basically, you should use it if you feel ‘windy’, bloated, have indigestion or a hangover (with the latter, a pain killer may also be needed as Andrews concentrates on the stomach problems).
For the above symptoms, add one level teaspoon to a small glass of water and stir. The mixture will effervesce and you should drink it quickly to obtain maximum benefit from the fizzing (as I find a good burping session always helps). The bubbles tickle your nose and tongue and I think this is what puts a lot of people off. The liquid tastes slightly lemony, but I find it to be a pleasant, clean taste (especially after a curry the night before). I can highly recommend Andrews for these purposes.
So, on to its other use – it is also a laxative if you take two level teaspoons in water (before breakfast or at bedtime). It does advise you to consult your doctor if this is required every day. One day I was feeling bloated, so decided to take some. In my hurry I misread the instructions, noticing the words ‘two’ and ‘teaspoons’. Two heaped teaspoons and some burping later, I was already feeling better. We were in the car on the way to some friends’ house when I screamed ‘quick pull over at that restaurant!’ I ran through the main hall into the toilets and (without being too graphic) made some very loud noises during my ‘session’. I then had to walk back through the restaurant with everyone staring at me – how embarrassing! I can therefore vouch that Andrews does work extremely well as a laxative. If you need it, please take two LEVEL teaspoons though.
Andrews is available at most large supermarkets and chemists. It is not suitable for children under 3, but half doses can be given to children over 3. It contains sodium bicarbonate and magnesium sulphate and is made by Smithkline Beecham. The expiry date is up to 3 years and it should be stored below 25 degrees C and away from strong odours.
