I knew from the outset that i would be one of those paranoid mum's constantly worrying about my baby & wondering if he was still breathing through the night, so I invested in the Angelcare monitor with movement sensor mat.
The set includes a 'baby unit', 'parent unit' & movement sensor mat. The mat is placed under baby's mattress (if like mine, the base of the cot is slatted, or you're using it in such a moses basket, then you will need to place the mat on a firm surface such as a piece of plywood under the mattress), & is so sensitive that it can detect even the lightest of breathing. The mat connects to the baby unit which then transmits to the parent unit.
If no movement (yes, even light breathing counts as movement) is detected for 20 seconds, an alarm sounds on both the baby & parent units, enabling time to get to your baby & resuscitate them should the worst happen.
I had a panic last week when the alarm sounded. I flew into baby's room, only to find he had rolled to the other end of the cot where the mat couldn't pick up his movement. I had positioned the mat at the foot of the cot, seeing as I follow the 'feet-to-foot' rules. I have now moved the mat into the centre of the mattress, & it can easily detect movement wherever my son may roll to.
The downside to this system is that everytime you lift baby out of the cot, you have to remember to turn off the sensor mat, otherwise it will sound the alarm. In turn, you also have to turn off the parent unit, otherwise it thinks the sensor mat is defunct & sounds the alarm also! It is a bit of a faff, but well worth it for the peace of mind the system brings.
The parent unit also displays the room temperature, has volume control for the sound monitor side of things & has a parent talk-back function. I live in a 3-storey house & have never had any issues with transmission, or problems with sound quality.
Highly recommended.
