ANGELS FALL
NORA ROBERTS
In this book - "Angels Fall" - Nora Roberts mixes mystery and romance.
This book, published in 2006, contains three main subplots in the story -- a murder mystery, Reece's romance with Brody, and Reece's struggle to gain back normality.
Ms Roberts manages to incorporate the three aspects together resulting into and novel.
The story starts with the heroine, cook Reece Gilmore, as her car has broken down in Angel's Fist, Wyoming. Reece decides decides to stay in the little town for a day - but that day turns into months as she takes a a job as a cook in the local diner, rents the apartment upstairs and settles into town life at Angel's Fist.
It is then, through dreams and flashbacks from Reece, that e learn that she hasbeen the victim of a viscious and brutal crime in Boston, and that after the crime she checked herself into a psychiatric hospital to recover from the unmentionable horrors she had witmessed. Reece thoiugh had still been haunted by nightmares from her ordeal and panic attacks so she had headed across the country to try and regain some normality in her life.
Things aren't destined to run smoothely for Reece though, while out hiking along Snake River in the Grand Tetons she witnesses a murder..... or does she?
Reece runs back down the trail, and runs straight into Jamison Brody, who is a mystery writer and the local recluse who had given up a career at the Chicago Tribune over a year before.
Jamison helps Reece report the murder to the police, but Sheriff Rick Mardson can find no evidence that any crime had been committed there, and it is obvious that Reece's account is doubted.
Watching this brave, young woman overcome the horrors of her past made good reading even without the romance that ensues between Reece and Brody. Nora Roberts cleverly casts suspicions on the locals while developing the romance as Reece's and Brody's romance begins to get very passionate, throwing in several red herrings.
Because of the lack of evidence regarding the murder Reece claimed to have witnessed, and in view of her tragic past and phycoligacal problems, Brody ends up being the only person in town who believes her. Reece though, certain of what she had witnessed launches her own investigation. But she soon becomes the target of strange mishaps that range from insignificant things to dangerous situations, she immediately thinks that she has had a mental relapse and is losing her mind.
Reece, with Brody's help, has to find out exactly what happened to the woman on the trail before she ends up dead herself.
If you enjoy a well written book with excellent description and interesting characters, you will enjoy "Angels Fall.".
Nora Roberts strength lies in her description of her characters and their lives - the plot seems secondary. Nora Roberts made an excellent job describing the small-town atmosphere of Angel's Fist--where everyone knows what everyone else is doing; the locals are well-written each with their own delightful stories
This book is no deep mystery story - I worked out the killer early on in the book (although there are a few red herrings thrown in) it is still a good reas where the real story is in the relationships Reece finds as she re-discovers who she is while trying to cope with life after the tragedy in Boston.
The reader makes the journey with her as she trties to find pout 'who dunnit'.
Although the story line is rather predictable, it was still a wonderful story. Also, Ms. Roberts writing of the descriptive scenes of Wyoming and Montana was wonderful.
Summary: All Nora Roberts fans will love this one.
