Eminem. This one name brings up many opinions. Everybody seems to have an opinion on the rap star. Well, my personal opinion is that he's great. So as I'm a fan, I decided to purchase his book, Angry Blonde.
I was unsure about buying it at first, as I knew it had a lot of swear words in it that my mum wouldn't approve of :) However, she's heard me play his c-d's so I figured this wouldn't be much different.
Angry Blonde is an 148 page book with lyrics to many of his songs e.g I'm Shady, Rock Bottom, "97 Bonnie and Clyde, Kill You, The Way I am and many more. It contains a mix of songs from his second album, the Slim Shady lp and his third, the Marshall Mathers lp. There is also one song from his debut album, Infinite which was released in 1996 but didn't do well as Em wasn't really known.
Before each set of lyrics, there is an explanation about the song, like how it came together, or where he got the idea from, where he wrote it etc. For example, for the controversial song "97 Bonnie and Clyde (Slim Shady lp, where Em dumps his dead wifes body in the sea), we learn that the reason Slim wrote this song was because he and his wife (ex-wife now) weren't seeing eye to eye and she was trying to use their daughter Hailie as a weapon against him. She wasn't letting him see Hailie, so this song was to get back at her. Em has often said that the most important thing in his life is his daughter Hailie, so maybe writing a song like this wasn't unjust? Hailie's voice actually also appears on this song.
The beginning of the book has a couple of pages where the scene is set, and then an intro by the man himself. Here he states amongst other things that people read too much into his lyrics and that when it comes to music he is his own worst critic.
The book contains many nice pictures (some in the background of lyrics, other single pages etc) including a very humorous one of Em dressed up as Britney Spears (or S***ney Spears as Eminem would say) for the Real Slim Shady vid- he actually looks quite pretty!LOL The pictures are from a range of years, some from concerts and others from photoshoots.
Angry Blonde has some lyrics that only serious fans would probably know of, like some of his freestyles e.g. Pills.
To some people this book may be quite offensive as Slim is very honest and the lyrics, and explanations contain a lot of swearing. We all know what he's like though, so it's not really a surprise!
I found it moving in some places, he's not trying to get the sympathy vote, just trying to explain the meaning behind the lyrics. It shows that a lot of his rhymes are so good because of his real life experiences e.g. Rock Bottom. When he wrote the song he had got evicted from his house, more problems followed and then he got evicted from the next house he moved to because the rent money they were paying was not getting passed on.
I recommend this book if you are an Eminem fan, otherwise there is not much point. Some may conclude from this book that he is messed up/sick (as my cousin did), but others like me will know that he is actually a great person who has found a way to express himself brilliantly.
Advantages: great rapper Disadvantages: trouble he gets into
Though Eminem has sometimes been described as an overnight success, Eminem has grown from a poor boy from the street’s of Detroit to one of the best Emcee in the world today. Eminem has influenced the rap game with his rhyming skills and his twisted lyrics. Eminem was born Marshall Bruce Mathers 111 in Kansas City, Missouri, he was born 0ctober the l7th, 1975, and he was raised by his mother (Debbie Mathers) as his father left when he was six ... ...moving house every couple of months, he first lived in Kansas City then moved to Detroit when he was five, then from five to nine years of age he moved to Kansas City again for five years, then he moved to Detroit permanently, the change in schools frequently made it difficult for Marshall to form attachments and to make friends.
As a child Marshall was interested in comic books and television, he now says he didn’t really start opening up ...

Advantages: Complete information on Eminem Disadvantages: Doesnt mention much about his court case - for legal reasons obviously
Books are usually such a bore - i'm an outdoor girl, not someone to sit indoors, curled up with a book. That was until i read the first through words of Crossing the Line. (A book written in Marshall Mathers', alias Eminem/ Slim Shadys own words.) I was hooked immediately! I purchased the book myself for Christmas, afterall, its a must for any Eminem fan out there!
Basically, for a mere £8.99 the book contains everything to date about Marshall Mathers. ... ...his fame, his fortune. At times the book does have its moments where you arnt 'hooked', and i admit.. my eye's flicked a few lines the first time i read it. However, the book is full of knowledge.. and gives you the back ground and understanding of Marshall Mathers that would even make a 'Parent' understand where he is coming from with his lyrical content.
The book contains pictures of Eminem, past and present and is an easy to read book. Not hard ...

Advantages: Read and you'll see for yourself. Disadvantages: No lyrics or explination for Stan!
I got this book for myself for Christmas and I am very glad that I did. I am a big Em fan (as you may realise from some other of my opinions) and this book realle explains the thoughts behind the lyrics that everyone loves to hate.
As I read through I noticed that Eminem is just playing a character and simply throwing back at the world what the world has thrown at him. There is an explination behind every song he has written and you soon realise ... ...media make him out to be. He is simply expressing his views. Is that really such a bad thing?
The forward also points out that Em has true talent and deserves to be where he is. He soes everthing for his daughter Hailie Jade Scott and his love for her becomes clear as you read through.
The book is basically a lot of the lyrics from his two UK released albuns, the Slim Shady LP and the Marshall Mathers LP, along with some less known songs.
This ...

A glimpse at the REAL Slim Shady: Enigmatic rap superstar Eminem offers up his uncensored lyrics in this international bestseller. (72,000 sold of the hardback edition in the UK). Eminem's dominance in current American popular culture cannot be denied. His controversial songs and personal dramas have been the subject of headlines in just about every major international music magazine and newspaper. His refusal to pander to the press and his often flippant statements during interviews have only added to his appeal for the millions of young fans who worship him. Whether it's his nasty divorce with his wife Kim, his ongoing battle with gay rights organisations, the extraodinarily violent content of his songs, or his rumoured affair with superstar Mariah Carey, Eminem and his exploits cannot avoid the media spotlight. But despite the staggering album sales, the sold-out concerts, and the complete, breathless attention of legions of fans and an insatiable media, Eminem himself manages to remain an incorrigible enigma. This book, featuring official lyrics, personal commentary, and many never-before-seen photos, begins to illuminate this elusive star. Angry Blonde offers an unprecedented look into the mind of a modern musical genius.
