I should probably make a point of warning you straight away that if you have an addictive personality, you should steer well clear of Animal Crossing: Wild World. It took me a few goes to get into it, but by my third play on it I was completely and utterly hooked.

Background/History
--------------------------
Animal Crossing started off as a Nintendo 64 game in Japan, in 2001. Due to the decline in popularity of the N64, sales were not as good as expected, and so the Animal Crossing game concept was redeveloped as a GameCube game. It was released in North America in 2002, Australia in 2003, and Europe in 2004.

It's popularity saw that it was adapted for the Nintendo DS in 2005 (and there are rumours about Animal Crossing: City Folk being produced for Nintendo Wii).

The Game
---------------
Animal Crossing: Wild World is an RPG, meaning a role-playing game or a social simulator if you like. The game differs for each unique player - it follows a simple preset plot that can be altered by the actions of the user, resulting in different consequences to affect your personal game.

The game also reflects real life in that the date and time have an affect on your gameplay. For example, if you play on it at 5pm during the Summer, the sky will show sunset colours, whereas if you play on it at 11am during the winter, you will see snow all over the ground and trees. This gives the game another dimension by making certain events happen on the corresponding dates in real life - you may witness a firework's show in the autumn, or see sharks come to your town in the summer.

The main task of the game is to improve your house both inside and out, whilst paying of a mortage to a character called Tom Nook (named after the Japanese name for racoons, tanukis). To raise money, you run errands for your neighbours, collect fruits, fish and catch bugs, and sell them to Tom Nook in exchange for the town currency, bells. You can also spend bells on clothing, accessories and paper to write to your neighbours. This helps you become best friends with them and they give you a picture of them - just one of the many rare items you can acquire along the way.

Other tasks include collecting golden instruments (i.e. watering cans - based on perfect town rating, spades - made by buring a normal spade for 24 hours), donating fossils, insects, fish and paintings to the town museum, collecting items relating to other Nintendo games such as Mario moustaches and golden coins, winning fishing tournaments and a range of other things.

This is one of the things that makes Animal Crossing: Wild World playable for a considerable amount of time, because the game could literally go on forever as you try and collect every single item or achieve every reward.

Multiplayer Options
--------------------------
Though you can only have one player at a time using the DS controller, you can interact with friends by using DS to DS wifi connections, or via wifi connections through a router to play with friends outside of your close proximity. To use DS to DS wifi, you go to the town gate and either invite friends or say you want to go out. You friend then picks the corresponding action on their DS, and then you are able to play in their town, or they can play in your town. To use a wifi via a router, you must first exchange a 16 digit friend code. This is a measure to protect younger users and to ensure you only let in the people you want to let in to your town, but is also quite annoying in that if none of your friends are online with their DS, you cannot just go into a lobby and find someone else to play with.

Where I Got It
------------------
I bought my game in Gamestation - a games retailer in the UK for approximately £20 preowned (could possibly have been a little bit more). It was in fantastic condition, though the cartridge had not been cleared by the previous owner, and there were some rather unsavoury comments and names programmed in by the user. However, after wiping the cartridge of their save files, I was able to start my game again and enjoy it from the very beginning.

My Thoughts On The Game
-------------------------------------
When I first heard about Animal Crossing: Wild World, I thought the game concept sounded truly awful, as no doubt you would upon reading what I have written. However, in actually playing the game myself, I could sense what it was that was making other people so keen on it and addicted to playing it so often. I can't quite explain what it is that makes it so good, other than the fact that it is always different and adapts in relation to the season or date you play it. I would highly recommend it both to younger DS users, and adults, because either age group would be interested in the gameplay.
