I recently bought a Nintendo DS and with it a load of games to keep me occupied; one of these games was Animal Crossing - Wild World. I had been recommended it by a male friend of mine, but didn't really know what it was about as such (bar a little insight from the advert on TV) so have been playing it for a while to see what it is all about.

You start off in a taxi, where you are asked where you want to go to… I wasn't sure where to put so I hazarded a guess and said 'home' *cue the family fortunes noise for the wrong answer*; what I really should have given was a name for the town I wanted to create, silly me for not reading up on it so I now live in a town called 'home'.

When you get to your town, you will pull up outside the town hall, and there you can go in and speak to the person on the counter who will tell you where your house is, and a few other bits that you may need to know. The town hall is also the local post office/bank - you just direct your character to whichever side of the counter you are requiring.

After that you can go and see your home, and meet a character called Tom Nook who is who you owe money to for your mortgage. The mortgage is in a currency called 'bells' and to get you started paying it off, you get some work from Tom in his shop doing some menial tasks; these also get you learning how to do the controls within the game and also to go and meet all the other characters in the town to introduce yourself. To pay off your mortgage after the work with Tom Nook has finished, you can shake apples down from the trees and sell them to Tom, and the same goes for shells from the beach. There are other ways to make bells, those being:

• Do favours for town folk, you'll need to talk to them and wait to see if they want you to do anything for them.

• Buy a fishing rod and start catching fish to sell to Tom; I find that I spend most of my time doing this as catching bugs is a pain and fish seem to give a decent amount of cash back regularly.

• Buy a spade and dig items up to sell to Tom, although you also get fossils which have no monetary value, but you can donate them to the museum instead. If there are any fossils that you have already donated, keep them in a safe place in the town as some town folk will want them later in the game I'd expect so you can give them to them at that point. Also with the spade, you can hit the rocks, one of them each day will throw out bags of money, increasing in value each time you hit it… it does knock you back though so a good tip is to put holes behind and around you so you have nowhere to be knocked back to.

• Shake trees randomly, sometimes money comes out, but beware of the bees as they will sting you, to avoid being stung you can leg it to one of the town folks houses; but I've never made it yet and to be honest, the stings don't hinder your game in any major way so I've noticed.

There are a few other ways to make money, but I'll let you explore that yourself as I wouldn't want to make it too easy, and thus boring for you.

In this game, you play in real time… it's a nice idea but can be annoying if you want to play outside of the trading hours for nooks shop (8am until 11pm), you can change your Nintendo DS time in the settings in the main menu of your DS but it's a bit of a pain really when they could have just as easily made the shop a 24 hour shop. Also nooks shop closes for a day every now and then (Apparently when a certain amount has been spent in his store, although I've been playing about a month or so now and it's been closed twice) for renovations and improvements; and when it says it will close, it does actually close for that day. I think this is unnecessary as surely it could do the 'improvements' overnight rather than stopping play (if you want to sell items) for an entire day. I've since read that it doesn't do this all the time, just until it gets to the top renovation for the shop, still annoying though in my opinion as it's not even like you can just save up all the items you collect to sell as you have limited pocket space and limited home space.

A lot of the time playing this game seems to be spent wandering around and either fishing, catching bugs, digging things up or shaking trees so you have things to sell to Tom Nook, who is the person who runs the local shop. He seems to be loaded and never runs out of money to buy items from you… doesn't he know there's a recession?

I spend most of my time fishing and digging it has to be said, although I will say that I am getting slightly bored of catching the same old fish and am hoping to catch some of the more *rare* fish to make more money sooner rather than later! Selling fossils is quite lucrative but you need to be aware that they have to be identified at the museum first… I didn't think you could sell them and have given loads away *doh* still I know now which is what counts. A few good guides to what the fish, fossils and bugs are worth and what times of year/day they are available are here:

The rest of play is focussed around talking to town people, and making your house a home - and a stylish one at that, as your home gets marked by the HRA (Happy Room Academy) although I haven't found out if this actually gets you anything other than a total score for your décor.

You get given items randomly and for doing favours, or you can buy items from the shop for your home, but once in the home there doesn't seem to be any 'use' for them apart from the happy room academy score… this is disappointing really as it limits play, and they missed opportunity for mini games in my opinion. I tend to sell the majority of what I am given to pay off the mortgage sooner.

There are some characters that come and go, moving into your town and then moving on to bigger and better things (or at least that is what I would expect), these are characters that you will talk to and possibly run errands for but when they leave, with the exception of maybe a conversation or a note about them leaving, it doesn't seem to affect game play.

There are also the constant characters that are usually found in the same place:

Tom Nook - As mentioned, he can always be found in his shop.

Pelly - She works at the local post office/town hall and is very friendly, she is found there during the day; if you go late on you'll find her sister who isn't as friendly or into her work.

Tortimer the Mayor - He can be found outside the town hall and post office when there's a special event on, otherwise I believe he sleeps behind the town hall counter (although I've never looked myself).

Blathers - You can find him at the museum, along with his brother who works in the café area. Blathers will check out fossils, paintings and also receive donations to put I n the museum.

Mabel and Sable - These are 2 sisters that work in the clothing shop next to Nooks store, they sell clothing and accessories and also allow you to design your own patterns.

Copper and Booker - These guys guard the towns gate but are also the people you need to speak to if you want guests to visit your town, and for you to go and visit other peoples towns.

Other characters may come into it further down the line, I can only go off who I have experienced so far but it gives you an idea of who's around to start with and what they do.

There is also one other character that you may meet if your DS is low on battery and cuts out, or if it is turned off before saving your game for any other reason. This character is called 'Mr Resetti' and he pops up at your front door to give you a lecture about resetting. You have to go through an entire speech from him when he pops up to tell you off for not saving and also have to put up with him calling you a resetting cheater.

Now I know my nephew doesn't play this as yet, but he turns his DS off like this all the time, so I can imagine it would be even more frustrating for him to have this happen every time he started playing again as 'Mr Resetti' does go on and on and on with his rant. I don't think you need so much 'talk' to say to remember to save before turning off to be honest.

This game, even with all the flaws I have mentioned that I have come across *so far* is still incredibly addictive, even if like me you were only playing to see if there was any real point to the game. There's no real game objective but to live a life in this town and pay off your mortgage whilst meeting new characters and doing day to day tasks. This could mean that its addictiveness will wear off earlier than you'd like, but then most games these days have a shelf life so there's no difference with this one.

It's played by children and adults alike I'd say but does kind of air on the younger side of game play, and is quite silly at times so if you're a serious gamer it's probably not one for you.

Below is a link to a good guide to the game, and although I have put some of the more specific links from it up already (above), I think it's still useful for me to point you in the direction of the full guide. I think it's probably worth a look before purchasing the game if you are currently considering buying it so that you can get even more of a feel for it. The guide is here:
