I own two lovely Saint Bernard dogs, who mean the world to me and I am sure that every dog owner would agree and know just how expensive it can be when your beloved pet becomes ill and has to pay a visit to the vets.
The bills can be very expensive indeed and that’s why it is very important that you take out dog insurance. Well, I recently received my renewal for mine and nearly died at the cost quoted this year. I was with a company called KBIS; they seem to be one of the most expensive around, although I must admit that they have also been very quick to pay out on a claim, usually within a week, which was excellent. However, as my dogs are a large breed, you have to pay more for insurance, which I personally don’t think is fair. I decided to look around and try and find a better deal, as I was quoted £38 a month for both of my dogs. I wondered where to start looking, and then it came to me CIAO of cause. I took down all the details from the opinions written here and began ringing around.
I decided to go with Animal friends insurance as they certainly beat all others on price and the policy offered covered everything. The other reason for choosing this particular company was that they work with Animal welfare groups and all their net profits go to helping animals. They have a discretionary fund that gives grants to help animals all over the world, which is great idea. They offer two types of insurance, which are Standard or Gold, which I will now list below the cover and amounts:
Standard ----------------- Gold
Advertising and Reward - £250 ------- £500 Boarding Fees - £500 ------- £1000 Death from Accicent/Illness - £250 ------- £750 Holiday Cancellation - £750 ------- £2000 Loss by theft/straying - £250 ------- £500 Third party liability - £2,000,000 ----- £2,000,000 Veterinary Fees - £2000 ------- £4000
Premiums Small/Medium size dog. £95.12 or £119.92
Large dogs(Great Dane,Rottweiler etc £104.60 or £131.92
I am now paying only £22.00 a month for both my dogs, which is quite a big saving. They also do home insurance, motor insurance, travel and business, which I have yet to look into. If anyone is interested their web site address is www.animalfriends.org.uk or telephone number is 08704443438.
This is certainly worth a look and you may be able to save yourself some money. I will of cause come back and update my opinion as to how they deal with my first claim, when ever that may be. I hope that you have found this helpful and thank you for reading.
Advantages: gives net earnings to charities Disadvantages: russian roulette if your pets covered, could land yourself with a large vet bill
...only 2 available E&L and animal friends, I liked animal friends as they had gold, silver, and bronze policies but net profits go to help animal charities. I have decided to write this review after a telephone call i received from them this morning.
I got a quote from their website last night £13.03 per month for the bronze policy which is not to bad for a pet over 8 years old. i read the small print, the excess is £49, but i would have to pay an ... ...old rope".
According to animal friends, if my dog gets anything else wrong with him, like cutting his pad open, getting an infection it rests with the hands of god whether im covered or not. I asked her for clarification by hyperthetically saying so if my dog gets a cyst which can be treated with antibiotics, your telling me im not covered? Which she hummed and arrred about and i took that to mean a yes.
So frankly they want me to pay them £170 ...

Advantages: All profits go to animal charities Disadvantages: None
I came across Animal Friends Insurance on the internet (www.animalfriends.org.uk) they provide car, home, caravan, travel, health and pet insurance.
Having just adopted a dog from the RSPCA I immediately wanted to insure her and decided to "shop around". Finding A.F.I. I was amazed at their premiums being so cheap for such good cover. Under their standard dog policy the premium is £7.37 per month or £88.49 per year. The cover provides:
£1500 for ... ...death
The excess is just £30 or 15% of claim whichever is the greater. Better than any other excess or cover I looked at.
As a bonus all profits go to animal charities. I have not yet made a claim but expect payment to be prompt. ...
